what does you think about this survival kit?

Burncycle,

If you are carrying a fixed blade knife in a sheathe with MOLLE attachment points, you may be able to roll up a gallon ziplok bag and slide it behind those loops.

Hey Flix, after rereading your post I was wondering if you figured a way of sealing your food saver bag after treating water for carrying/storage?

Short answer, the ziplock portion of your average ziplock bag is too long and folding that is problematic.

Something like this would be good (This is probably less than a liter, but it shows an example of how a much larger container can fit into a smaller kit)

Basically the width of the ziplock portion is tailored to fit into the container without having to fold it.

Liter sized would be ideal, so you could just pop a purification tablet in. Half liter sized would be acceptable though, you can split one tablet in two. The current gerber milk bags hold 6 oz, or .177 liters --- so needless to say it would be a PITA to split a tablet almost 6 ways.

For those who perfer altoids tins to SAS tins, I'm sure a half liter sized version could be created with it's ziplock width determined by the altoids tin length.

I would be getting the intellectual rights on that idea nailed down. Add pleats and you have it.

As to tins, we really get hung up on the small tins. It's a great game to see how much you can get in a small space, but I've found it just too limiting. Water and boiling/cooking are the biggest problems. It is a good principle to have something that will fit in your pocket, but I haven't found any good answers. Like the one fellow who put the space blanket on the outside of the tin with ranger bands, you could add a one liter Platypus bladder the same way. There's no free lunch!

With any of these improvised water carrying systems, remember that you can weave up a net/basket with paracord to carry it. Those really interested in bushcraft could probably whip up something in grass or bark. A partially full gallon ziplock would be okay if staying put, but a challenge to keep closed if bushwacking.

These sorts of challenges are what drive the Nalgene-based PSK's. I got an idea for a thread....

Hi Chris,

I haven't done anything to try to seal this bag, but I guess I could make a couple of angled heat seams on the top to make the opening smaller, and possibly make a carry net out of paracord. (Of course, I'll have to ask Doc for guidance on that!)
