Came across this from Mineral mountain hatchet works, what's your thoughts on this type of tool for survival ?

Looks like it sort of has a ULU shape which I hink would make it handy for food prep and skinning...

looks like i wouldn't know what to do with it...

but in all seriousness it looks like i would like it for cutting things on a cutting board because the hand is up and out of the way.

i wouldn't like it for push cuts in wood because the hand is so far from the edge, would probably make it hard to control.

doesn't look like something i would pick up if i had a choice, but it might work alright. really hard to say just how it handles without holding it.

Not really hot on MMHW's edges. I have owned a Survival Bowie and their DV8 drop point and really too thick.

I'd go for a GB Mini. Edge is much better.

A buddy of mine has a MMHW ummm... Axe/rescue tool hatchet... thingy, lol.
Can't remember the name :o
Basically cockroaches and that thing will be the only thing that will survive after the meteor hits!
;)

Those things are tough but heavy and ridiculously thick, makes a Busse look like a Mora.
:D

i would have to feel it to judge it.i can say that MMHW makes some good stuff.i always liked the cleaver he did.

i used to have a MMHW piece.it was a the BATTLE HATCHET.i sold it because i thought it was designed more for fighting than any kind of bush craft so i never would've used it.

it was a very solid piece and i liked it a lot.some of his stuff though is a bit exatotic and almost has that fantasy look to it.there's a guy on e-bay that has like 50 of ted frizzells knives for sale at a time.ted frizzell is the guy behind MMHW.

here's the one i had.5160 was the steel and i loved it and i miss it.

I really wouldn't have any use for an item such as that. Not a fan of this style of tool. Would rather trade the weight for other stuff.

I would have to swing it before I had an opinion. Some of the flat hatchets I have tried did not have enough weight in the head to be good choppers and tend to roll when you use them. Stick with a traditional model like GB or Gerber/Fiscars.

I've always adimred his designs as artistic, but not real practical for me. They really look nice, but I just don't see using any of them much for one reason or another.

That's good to know, I was a bit interested in the survival bowie (in that hypothetical sort of way) a while back.

As a "survival" tool, it would be much better than your bare hands. That said, a fixed blade knife and/or a hatchet would be much, much better than that tool. Just my opinion.
