What EDC should I buy.

I would go for a bm grip as well.

Another great choice would be the spyderco manix 2--suprised it hasnt been mentioned. And also I cant leave without mentioning the spyderco para military--you wont be dissapointed by this guy. If any of these guys are melting, you dont have to worry because your car is on fire or your dead =D

A lot of good recommendations above but if you are going to be anywhere near saltwater I'd suggest one of the Spyderco salt knives.

You should get either the Salt 1 or the Pacific Salt (both from Spyderco). H1 steel keeps a good edge and work-hardens over time. It is also rust-proof. People have submerged the blade in salt water for over 48 hours and the blade didn't rust. In addition, both come in either black or yellow handles and are very light.

I have the Salt 1 and it would definitely be my EDC in a hot, humid environment. The yellow handle makes it easy to find if dropped, it is very ergonomic and light and the steel doesn't rust. What more could you ask for?

If you like S30V, Buck has two reasonable choices: A good old standard lockback 110 with an AlTiN coated S30V blade sold by Cabela's under their 'Alaskan Guide' line for $70 and the new Buck 347 Vantage Pro - a flipper with a strong liner lock - and $45 from Bass Pro Shops, etc (MSRP $75). Keepers, both!

At the other end of your range - all of that $160 and possibly a few more - are the Benchmades in S30V - like the 615 mini-Rukus. I have the 610 full sized Rukus - and want the mini, too. Very well made knife.

Really, you should get a SAK. Swisschamp is nice, but there are lots of options.
Custom wood scales too. The plastic probably won't melt on you, especially if you keep it in your pocket.

Other than that, Spyderco Manix 2 is a great deal.

ZT 300

You want G-10, micarta, carbon fiber or metal handles, FRN has various levels of quality, be careful there, I had some screwdriver handles melt/break on me so I know what you mean.
Do not buy any knife under $45.

I understand the salt, yup. BUT if you take regular care of your knife, even if you live on a boat for 6 months it is not necessary. The ZT 300 is one of the best production folders made, $235, it's a frame lock and warranteed up the ying yang, you can get a factory second for $150 or so without a warranty, I have one of these. You want G-10, micarta, carbon fiber or metal handles, FRN has various levels of quality, be careful there, I had some screwdriver handles melt/break on me so I know what you mean.
Do not buy any knife under $45.

I can think of many examples that preclude such an absolute statement.

My Spyderco Tencious being one of them.

I wont diss your knife, it depends on requirements and expectations of the user. I do not see any knife costing so little as being a long term tool. I may be spoiled with the knives I have, but for many years I had a $10 knife [$30 by todays standards let's say] and the non-stop problems of blade play, wear, low performance steels and doubtful operation were instructive.

Educate me, give an example of a Tenacious or similar knife which performed well in a demanding arena for 10 years or more. Or any example you may choose if you think I have set the bar too high. Regards, TCR

Yes, it does depend on your requirements. We are talking about some guy's EDC here. I don't know where ten years in a "demanding arena" came from.

The ZT0200 that arrived at my doorstep yesterday is expected to last quite a while. :)

Since there was no time frame [critical] of use I made one up, you also had the option of giving your own. If the OP will make the sacrifice of replacing his EDC on a regular basis due to lower quality he will be making other sacrifices as well

Enjoy that 200, they are true butt-kickers.

;)

Just got a ZT200. It is going to take a good knife, to knock this one out of my pocket! Made like a custom knife.

Having owned and used two of the knives that have been suggested to you, (the grip and the Manix 2, I have a 556 mini grip, and a Manix 2 regular) I would say that you cannot go wrong with either one. Both are excellent knives and do the job they are designed to do well. However, if I had to pick one, I would go with the Manix 2 due to the superior ergonomics and the heavier duty design. Take your pick. You will not be going wrong with any of the knives in question, especially these two.

Do not buy any knife under $45.

Kershaw Skyline
Kershaw OD-1
Kershaw Zing
Spyderco Tenacious
Spyderco Persistence
Most of the Byrd line
Boker Trance
Boker M-Type
Buck 110
Buck Vantage

I'm sure I missed a few, but these are all EXCELLENT knives for under $45.

Not ot mention Opinels ^^

Böker Com's ( Subcom, ClawCom, Wharcom )= excellent little knives. Wharcom is excellent box cutter. If you buy under $45 knives you could buy Tenacious, Zing ahd Trance and still be under $ 160 in good case and have three excellent knives.

I keep ending up right back here. I keep thinking i have found the knife for me, and then I'm turned off by something about it. What Do you recommend? My tasks are Cutting tape to break down boxes, cutting through bags, occasional other semi hard use. Another thing I live in Florida, so i am not sure whether or not the ridiculous humidity here is going to affect my knife. I need something that will survive the heat and in the sense the handles won't melt. (by the way I have a phobia of this, I went in my grandfathers truck and saw his every day use knife melted to the little compartment near the dash) I need something that has a good or at least decent steel, preferably s30v but I will gladly settle for something of less quality as long as it serves my needs. I also really prefer Frame locks, that or axis or other patented systems, just preferably not liner. I would also prefer a price tag lower than $160. If the price is higher, but is still very good, please list it anyways, i am willing to save. Btw, I considered the Griptilian, but the tasks I do are usually done in hot weather, so I just don't want melted FRN in my hands.

EDIT:What I really meant about the humidity was I didn't want the blade or handles to just start rusting.
Spyderco Caly 3.
