I only like spydies and dislike most other folders because I love the hole and find it fastest and surest secure opening method for me.

What other brands and styles are out there that feel as good? THe closest I have come is the bm griptillian with hole and the old AFCK's with a hole?

The Buck Mayo TNT (and real Tom Mayo knives) have a squared-oval hole. The SNG-ish Buck Striders (and the real SNG and SMF Striders) also have a squared-oval hole, as well as thumb studs.

I'll probably be shot for mentioning it but the "gasp" gerber e-z outs used a kind of funky elongated hole. I carried one for a pretty good while until an endura took its place and it was a pretty good knife. ahgar

Spyderco is the only company that makes production knives with a round hole. They own the trademark or patent or whatever the legal term is.

Spyderco only has the patent on one hole IIRC. Try the Benchmade 630 Skirmish and 635 mini skirmish.

The Swamp Rat Rat Trap has an opening oval. The Skirmishes have a stolen hole, but the edges are scalloped and I hear they aren'y as easy to use because of that.

Agreed. I had a tough time opening the Skirmish because of the beveled edge around the hole. It looks nice though.

That is a great question...I have been asking myself that question for a while. They are in a class by themselves.

I had one too, and it was great (probably still have it somewhere).
Emerson makes at least one knife with a hole. My 10 is just as easy to open as my Spydercos.

while we're on the subject of holes i have a question. It seems to me I remember several years ago reading that the hole in the knife deal was developed by almar. I also seem to remember that spyderco had to pay a royalty for the use of the hole in it's knives. Is this true or were the 80's just really good to me. If i'm wrong I'm sorry and no offense was intended. If i'm right i get to be spartacus for the day. any other old guys remember this????
thanks for your time, ahgar

I've never heard anything like that. Both companies started making knives at about the same time, so that info could possibly be true. I've always been under them impression that Spyderco invented the one handed operating pocket knife.

Kevin Wilkins makes more than beautiful knives. He also had a license from spyderco. But they outclasses any Spyderco in terms of finnish and quality. (and unfortunatly also in price :( ).

Anyone can use the hole in thier design, they just have to pay spyderco. How about a benchmade Mini-skirmish or the Pro-lite series from Cold Steel.

The Blade-tech "V-hole" is the next best thing to Spyderco's round hole. At least to me.
