I'm going to get started making some knives and will be starting out with some 1084 steel. I would like to begin gathering up the tools I'll need to begin. I'm going to build a gas forge like the freon tank forge but other than that I'm really not sure what tools I should be putting together. I hope you guys could help guide me in the right direction...maybe post up a list of equipment and good place to find it. I'm on a fairly limited budget so this will be put together piecemeal.

A Nicholson magicut file, a good bench, some C-Clamps, some single cut files, a couple round files, and finally a LOT of sandpaper. total: <$100

That can be a real loaded question, and you'll likely get a lot of different answers. How limited of a budget are you talking about?

I started out with a grinding wheel on a 1/4hp electric motor, a set of files, and that was about it. Then picked up a Craftsman 2x42 grinder and a drill press.

Spend some time reading the "STICKY" threads at the top of this foum. Tons of info with all your answers and more.
