Yep they are viable tools for modern day as well. Check to see what alot of spec op guys use. RMJ, Winkler etc
I wish the Eastwing hawk had more of a breacher type design. The cut out in the blade and that spike design limits its usefulness.
 
I have a eswing carpenters hatchet ,that my dad bought me in the sixty's . I have use it for almost 50 years ,camping traping and woods walking . The only thing , I wish it had a longer handle.
