What Ever Happened to KOA?

The highly figured wood is the only reason people like KOA.

Plain jane KOA (which is cheap KOA) just looks like any other plain wood.

I wouldn't even consider it.
I agree, but your statement "because they actually look like KOA." is simply wrong!

LOL, Mak. How many times have you said that now?

I know you're just kidding me.

I know almost everyone here reads everything I say.......and, like you, they respond.

We're all here to learn. Therefore we read.

I think if we all promote a more friendly atmosphere the forum will get even better.
No I don't think he is, and it is obviously a general consensus.
You are the CHIEF pot stirrer and it's tiresome, yes I come here to learn and probably less than 10% of your post that anything is gained.

Ok, make it because they actually look like the more desirable highly figured KOA.

I can't always be precisely right.

:D
Ya, my personal opinion is if I am going to put that much effort into something it's not likely to be a plain ole straight grained piece of wood.

Ha, not so easily!

However, there are many folk that do like plain straight grained wood, look at how many, I think you included that like the blackest ebony.

(Smacks forehead)

I guess I got carried away with the buddy idea.

Yes.......Some straight grain is good. I have some colored laminates, too......I just want the showiest KOA if I'm getting KOA.

here's some more pictures, one more highly figured and desirable, both have gold blades, but also not at all the same for both being gold. I like to take too many pictures.....

One will get Mastodon handles in the near future, or maybe next year at the latest. The one with the unsharpened blade

SH, both of those are nice, I sure wouldn't re do the figured one, even though I really like you mastodon re handles.

Really nice knives.

I keep wishing (strongly wishing) that I'd had mine done with finger grooves.

Maybe if the KOA comes back I'll have another made up.

Koa is one of the more expensive lumber species, and supply is limited. For highly figured lumber, the price increases to $100-$150 per board foot.
Bert

So.........tease that fact out a little for one who is math challenged and has only a vague board foot ken.

Does this mean really NICE KOA is going to be insanely expensive in the Custom Shoppe???

How much of a board foot could a couple of slabs use up?

A few years ago, there was an embargo on Koa wood, and the price skyrocketed... thats why its no longer available

Do you have an idea of what good slabs for a 110 or 112 would cost now if the Custom Shop were to offer them again?

There were some cost estimates earlier in the thread, but nothing precise.

I'd pay more than we did years ago for a 110 or 112 with nice KOA.......but how much more would it be?

That's the question.

It would be nice to hear from Buck on this question........
