What Exactly is a "Grail"?

grail = the folder

'nuff said.

The grail is mythical, powerful, legendary, unseen, and drives men to the brink.

If I call the knife I am selling a grail, how much extra should I tack on?

Thats kind of difficult to say.....what you call a "grail" may be a lesser or not a grail at all to someone else :) Rarity does not make it a grail. If it is something that is sought after by many and known to be extremely rare....the market itself would dictate a higher price without the "grail" declaration at all.

I think the term "grail" is very subjective to both the individual selling and individual shopping/hunting.

For all you know if it is a grail to someone else they may be willing to pay over $1,000 more than the accepted secondary market because of how much they love it.

As everyone else I have knives I consider "grails" yet I am fairly certain there are only a handful that place as high a value on them as I because of my unique tastes for Busse knives :D yet I would gladly pay quite a bit more than a competing buyer to obtain them.

grail status = 100% mark up in price.

seems pretty much like every knife sold on the bay is a grail knife (\"super rare, never to be made again, only one I have ever seen"

Yeah, I think a knife becomes a grail when it gets listed on eGay. It suddenly becomes much rarer.

I will sell mine as Rare Civil War grail Busses forged from meteorites by Jerry's Hillbilly ancestor Cletus.

A "Grail" to me is something that: 1) I've had to look long and hard to find, 2) a lot of other people want, 3) is usually not cheap, and 4) very few are made, if not a one of a kind.

It's also a term used by some who's priorities are completely out of whack.

A grail is what we cook on out in the back yard here in Georgia.

A grail knife ? I'd like one of those old samurai swords designated a national treasure of Japan.

I think a grail knife is the one YOU see as the end-all, be-all. There is nothing you would rather have, nothing can replace it, and once you get it you will never get rid of it. It will be locked in a safe, only taken out to be fondled and oiled.

Heck, I can see a grail knife being one that you don't even photograph, don't talk about, and only a hand full of people know you have it.

Like Gollum would say, "My Precious!"

George...for you EVERY sabre SFNO is a grail (except the ones you've sold). For me, it is a Satin/Tiger Sabre SFNO an ABALE and an SHBA. Those are knives I won't sell if I can grab them all.

I see it applied to knives which are hard to find and very expensive to procure. And the assumption is that once one DOES grab one, he/she will NOT let it go (unless there is some sort of drastic situation).

Really though, it's just a name used to designate the next knife we are searching VERY HARD for.

The General concept is one of "The Search for the Holy Grail"

Some thing people search for but are not likely to ever find.

A rare or hard to find knife, usually very costly as well.

It's all about the search for me ... the quest, if that is not too rarefied a term to use for a mere knife.

The expense isn't the point. It's not really about the goal ... it's about the quest.

Does that make sense?

yeah tack on a $200 over original retail grail fee on that MOAB. . .

...and I'd be losing 25% of what I've got into it. Getting it back from DN was EXPENSIVE (and totally worth it!)

Oh, LOL :) Though if a set amount had to be determined a mere $200 would be much appreciated in the future :D

Okay, $200 + the original price of the first OD...Deal...now how did that calculation go again? ;)

From reading this thread, sounds like a SOUL 1 would fit the bill. Reputed to exist but rarely if ever seen. (Kind of like the folder.) Never to be photographed. Never to be sold or traded w/o Jerry's permission. Wouldn't know one if I tripped over it and not sure I'd even want one that rare and secret. For me, "just" the next one or three I'm keeping an eye out for, hoping to get really lucky someday. Pete

I think that I might understand.

I spent 7 years chasing a Hood Knife, a particular Hood knife it being the only one that I ever heard of getting sold after issue to anyone but Ron Hood.

After 7 years I was about to purchase it, I ended up having to buy a user One of Three Hundred, a Presentation Limited Edition Numbered One of Three Hundred SHBM and a Way Cut down Bowie SHBM Variant about the size of a SHSH in order to get the Hood Knife.

A Package Deal.

Randucci Chased the Logo on the Spine Straight Handled A-2 Models.

Several people have chased the "Ghost" SHSHs.

The Hunt continues.

Good Hunting to all of you.
