What exactly is a hunter, anyway?

My ancestors not that long ago chased animals around and stabbed them,. I guess it is how well off you are, or how hungry, huh?

I know several guys who have had to use their knives to finish off downed deer, usually by sitting their throats. It's neater than shooting at point blank range I would imagine. Lots of good info in the above replies; I'll just add that it can be done with just about knife you've got at the time. My dad field dressed a doe once with a 1.5" no name pocket knife because he'd forgotted his regular hunter. He's got a Shrade Sharpfinger I reprofiled now, it works a lot better.

When hunting I always carry a fixed blade ( Master Hunter Carbon V ) and a folding knife also. I agree with Storyville that a hunter doesn't have to be stainless to be a hunter, doesn't take alot of room to keep a small bottle of oil or tuff cloth with ya for rust prevention. I have several fixed blades but that Master Hunter is a wicked slicer an holds an edge, and when my hands get wet the handle DOESN'T slip ( very important ) for a deer hunter I think !! It's just a perfect deer/hunter knife for me, IMHO
