What features does a pig hunting knife have?

Is there a definitive "Pig Hunting Knife"? How exactly is a pig hunted with a knife? Does the hunter just confront the animal and stab it in the neck, or is the animal pinned by dogs and the throat slit? Excuse my ignorance, but every once in a while pig hunting is mentioned, and when I try to look up pictures of pig hunting knives I am seeing either classic bowies or knives that look like space fantasy knives. What actually makes a good pig knife, and how is it used? Any examples?

Lycosa, Yes, I am being serious, and I can figure it out. I have done some research and have come to conflicting conclusions, and as part of coming to a satisfactory answer thought asking here might clear up some of the confusion. Do you actually know the answer? Some information leads to the Hogs being gutted, some to where the pig is stabbed under the "armpit", Some where the hog is pinned by dogs and the throat slit, or stabbed in the neck. It seems to me a different type of knife would be used, and all these methods might be correct and have separate knife designs for each method. The only common feature that seems shared is the blade length seems to be a minimum of nine inches. Many of the articles and posts I have read are guesses and second hand information, and some custom designs I have seen seem to have be drawn from people who have limited experience with the sport. Does anyone have practical knowledge?

When hog hunting with a knife you use dogs. We use baying dogs to flush or hold their postion and send in the catch dogs. Then you go in behind the hog and stab it behind the right shoulder to get at the heart.
The knife you use should be at least an 8 inch blade with a spear point works best. I will say this. This method is not for the faint of heart. If I get time I will post a pic of my knife that I use to hunt hogs with. Hope this helps.

not bein a smart butt here but as long as its resilient, sharp, pointy, long and has a good grip on it you can call it a pig killer

Having shot a hog with a 45-70 and the have it chase myself and a buddy into a mesquite tree, I'll agree with you on the "not for the faint of heart" part. After turning its head into a popcorn bowl with my buddy's 357, we spent the better part of that afternoon and evening laying naked on a picnic table while his mom (a RN) pulled thorns out of our respective asses, giggling the entire time.

Thanks for the help to satisfy my curiosity folks! Pig sticker, I would like to see that photo.

Robert J, Not being a smart butt here either, as this is a knife forum, your definition covers most large knives. And yours very well might be the answer. I am just trying to learn something here.

That story should be told to every prospective knife-hog-hunter.

You got more nards than I do fella.

When I went on one of those hog hunt we had a Cold Steel Spear point on a rigid peice of emt conduit, and a 12 inch Machete that was modified into a razor sharp spear point. Used the baying dogs to corner the hogs, then used the pit bulls to grab hold of the hog. The owner of the dog would grab the rear leds and turn him a little so that we could stab it right behind the front legs. Its a savage and bloody way to hunt hogs but I think everyone should try it at least once.

You can hunt a hog with anything in ohio.

That is pretty much the description of what happens doens here as well.

Basically a short spear would do the same job but be harder to carry - typically a longer knife seesm to be the go. There specialist magazines Bacon busters has alot of this. You can buy armour for your dogs and I suspect most doggers have a needle and thread at hand

I believe I saw a picture of a guy on here who used a Busse to hunt hogs as well as a pair of Pit bulls.I'm not sure of the Model of the Busse.

if i was to wanna hunt hogs with a knife (really isnt my cup of tea lol) i would use a bayonet or something that if it gets stuck in the hog and the hog runs off he isnt running off with a $300 busse something or another lol.

have heard of folks doing this but imho i prefer to stick with either a browning BLR .243 or a savage 99 .300 savage, or maybe a ruger super blackhawk .44 mag.

i know a guy who hunts 'em occasionally with a knife, mostly with bow/arrow though, he uses an old mauser '98 bayonet.

becker made a version of the BK-9, dubbed the BK-9HH (hog hunter). only diff was the upper swedge came sharpened.

My geographical location is not really hog or boar hunting area, although I know of the sport despite never having done it myself. However, whenever I hear the term "pig-sticker" I can't help but think of the slang prison term for a makeshift shank forged fromn a swiped spoon or similar utensil, lol. :foot:
