What features does a pig hunting knife have?

Bumppo - there are lots of "knife hog hunting" videos on Youtube, so it's easy to see how they do it.
When it comes to knife, it should be long and have good penetration potential. Big bowie is good, large dagger(40-60cm long) is better, and 140cm long bastard sword with "stopping bar" in the middle of the blade would be best(i've seen such in antique catalogue).

No problem:) If you want to see what kind of knives hog hunters are useing take a look at Krein knives. He has a very nice one. Also check out Larry Harley's website. lonesomepineknives.com. If you wanna go hog huntin look him up:)

Greg Lightfoot used to do that (and maybe he still does) and named one of his fixed blades Hoghunter. I think it's the model he actually used for the hunt.
I don't know how good it is for actually hunting hogs, but it's one of my favourite personal blades.

I don't think M16 is very effective to stop a full-grown hog. IMHO slug shotgun is what you need.
It is quite effective I killed a boar about 2 years ago with a 55 grn fmj 5.56 out of my 16" bushmaster. 1 shot throught the lungs and it dropped right where I shot it. Is it ideal heck, no but it works well if the operator knows what he is doing.

You need a smatchet! :D :D

Come on guys... I know some of you thought about it long ago...

Hogs have gotten quite a reputation as being tough as nails. They are tough animals but remember that people have been slaughtering hogs forever with just a butcher knife or large pocket knife. I realize that wild hogs are a little different but the anatomy is the same.

I did one of the knife hunts SEVERAL years ago. I'm glad I did it but haven't felt compelled to do it again. I didn't care for using the dogs but they are pretty much required as the hogs don't generally want to stand around and fight.

I made up the knife pictured here. It's way overbuilt but I didn't know that going in. It is 1/4" ATS 34 and both edges are sharpened. I would suggest a sharp swedge so that you can cut on both the upstroke and downstroke after you stab the animal. It is a very messy thing to do and I learned where the term "bleeding like a stuck pig" came from.

Generally has a gun stuck to one end of it.

I notice that about half that bayo blade is useless, being blocked by the barrel...that makes it about a 3" blade. :)

These arn't my guns guys, but I would bring my 870 set up and busse hell razor.
I bought the competition hell razor because of the increased hog population in ohio.

I've hunted hog with a knife and spear a few times, and I'll say this: It should be big enough and sharp enough to kill the hog.

That's all the requirements I worried about. I used a bowie. Now that I'm in my 40's I don't do this anymore... I'm slower and more gimpy now than I used to be!

Isn't that a M4? Either way, 5.56 rounds wreak havok once inside a body, they are light enough that they tumble, causing horrific internal injury. A M4, M16, CAR15 whatever would drop a hog like a sack of wet lawn clippings.

i have found 77gr black hills works ok as long as ya hit them right, suprisingly to me 5.45X39 works better, neither are as good as a .300 savage though.

shotgun slugs will work, but in my neck of the woods the ranges are a little long for a shotgun, a lot of the time, most of the shots i have had lately were in the 100 yard area, but for me they are strictly a target of oppurtunity lol, and they are a wiley beast for sure.

I hunted hogs with dogs from texas to Argentina. In the USA it's always been with hounds for the bay and pits or Dogo's for the catch. In Argentina it is always Dogo's. While I write this I have a very old female Dogo sleeping on my foot.

The knives I used have been Cold steel trailmaster, Laredo, and I had a custom made knife done for me to my specs just to kill hogs.

The laredo to me was great with Blackhawk leather gloves. My son prefers the trailmaster.

I only seen hogs killed by a heart stab from under the armpit. The heart in a boar is placed hard to get from the front. Besides the front has the business end.

I would not ever use a serrated/teeth knife. Might grab and stick. The knife should be at least 11 inches. Not for most pigs probably 9 to 10 would work , but for the really big hog. There are more feral huge hogs here in the USA. Argentina has mostly Russian boar stock not crossed with domestic pigs.

The knife stab under the armpit is never withdrawn for another stab. Rather it is worked up and down destroying the heart.

I hunted with an ex-marine. He was a novice in hunting hogs. The K-bar he insisted using failed to kill the hog. The hog just got madder and madder. The dogs were saying
"What the ****" is this guy doing". It is very dangerous for a dog to latch onto a hogs face and hold on. It really is a joint hunt with the hunter dispatching the hog as fast as possible.

I described my Argentine knife before, do a search.

Timber Man

PS there is a group of Doctors in Argentina who raise the best Dogo's in the world.

Marcello's dogs hunt.

His web site is www.dogoman.com.ar

his site has lots of hunting pictures and pictures of knives.

Personally, I would prefer a .44 Magnum but I guess its a valid question...

Have you seen the Cold Steel Boar Spear? That would do the trick I reckon...

I would imagine the more distance between you and those tusks the better :D
