I would like to get everyone's opinion on which fillet knife I should buy. I would like to have an 8 inch blade and I also want one that will hold a very good edge without having to sharpen it all the time. I do not want a Buck knife, I had one and through it in the garbage because its a piece of junk. I would also like to have one that comes with a nice sheath. I think I would also like it to have s30v steel but I am not set on that I just want something that has very good edge retention and will not rest on me because I am using it for fishing. We do get some very big fish up here so I don't really want to go below 8 inch but a bit longer would not hurt.

Thanks

If you want to drop some coin, 100-200, have someone make you one to your specs. There are plenty of knife makers here that would be willing to do that.

I have had good results with the Mora fillet knife. Not sure if its 8", might be 7", but it has worked well for the average size bass or catfish I catch in my area.

Yeah, I just looked them up and it is a 6 inch blade. I do like the handle on it but a bit too short.

I don't mind spending some money as long as I get my money's worth. Who is the best knife maker on here and how long would I have to wait for my knife. That is the only thing that makes me hesitate about having one custom-made is having to wait too long to get it.

There is no "best knife maker here" but here is a thread with a nice filet that was reasonably priced.

If you see anything you like, contact the maker and see if they are taking orders. (the second link is still available)

I am unsure if Big Chris is taking orders (or any of these makers really) but If I were going to have a custom filet knife made, it would be by him. His grinds are amazing and he uses super steels. (The third link)

I have a Buck Harvest-Series Boning Knife (420HC blade) and a Rapala (steel is soft, cheap, but easy to sharpen).

Phil Wilson is one of the best makers of fillet knives you could ever find, but I think his wait-list is pretty long, you might find one of his on the secondary market...

But there are a lot of other makers with offerings. This one sold recently: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1295161-Long-Filet-SOLD?highlight=filet

Custom, baby... Custom all the way.

Buddy fishes in Alaska every year. Lamented the fact that he couldn't find a filet knife to his liking. I told him we should order him a custom piece. We contacted George Tichbourne (RIP) and told him what was up. George told us to measure his hand grip width, tell him how much flex he wanted, and his desired dimensions of blade.

The result was astonishing. The knife was beautiful to behold, fit his hand like a fishing glove, and performs like a dream to this day. We gave George creative license on the handle materials and blade finish, because what the hell, he was the artist after all.

Find yourself a custom maker over in the knifemaker's section and get to thinking how you want it.
