What flashlight do Usual Suspects use?

Hi, I'm going to upgrade my EDC_you_never_leave_home_without kit with an emergency/utility flashlight. I'm concidering SureFire E1 or E2 but Centurion-2 looks great too (is there any REAL deference between C2 and M2 for non-gun use?). Or maybe D2 or Z2? Just tell me what's your favorite small SureFire (and why if possible)?

Hi Piter

I carry the Surefire 9P. Unfortunately they don't make that one anymore and I'm trying to figure out which one is comparable to the 9P in their current line up.

The reason I like it is because of how much brighter it is compared to the 6P and the fact that it was only slightly larger, but larger enough to be able to use it as a striking weapon. It isn't at all harder to conceal due to it's size unless I carried it horizontally, which I don't. It would pretty much take up the same room as the 6P if I carried that.

I don't know if I qualify as a "suspect" but i'm going to throw in my 2 cents anyway.
I used to carry a Surefire M2 every day. I loved that flashlight, I had to sell it for money reasons, but man that was an amazing light. I didn't really use it that much though. I find the thing I use the most out of anything I carry including knives is my white Photon II, that is the most usefull little darn thing I have ever owned. I now have a 3D cell maglight in my glove box for roadside problems at night and as a thumping rod for 2 legged problems day or night- also a minimaglight in my emergency kit in my truck.
As nice as surefires are, you gotta love those old school dynamic maglights.:)

Hey Chris

You reminded me but I also have Mag-lites in the vehicles also. they put out decent light and do make an great thumping rod, like you say.

The photon II is also on my keychain. I have the red one and it helps me find a ton of stuff. That and the fact that if you try looking for something in the car or at a map with your SureFire you'll get blinded by the back splash of light. The photon's are great for this kind of lighting.

Thanks for the reminder
Ross T.

Oh hey Chris, about that Usual Suspect thingy you are one. But ya still have to do the ritualistic hazing and I haven't yet recieved the membership due of a EKI knife yet :)

Thanks Ross, so whtas the hazing like? Drain some canned porkchops down the beer bong and go play in traffic or what:)

I'm asking about SureFires because there is already a 2AA Maglite in my car (left door compartment) and 2D Maglite in the toolbox. CMG Infinity is always in my bag but I'd like an easy-carry, powerful light - so the question is rather "which SF" than "which flashlight"...

I always have two or three Photons on me at all times! When at work, I carry a Stinger (work gave it to me), an SL20 in the vehicle (they gave me that one too) and an Ultra Stinger as a spare.

Not working I carry an OD Anodizedzed 6P in a cover garment pocket about 50% of the time.

imho there isnt much a surefire Z2 combat light (a good small flashlight w/a lot of power, only con is the batts only last an hour or so, and they are kinda high) a 5 C cell mag light, or baton light ( a good light ya can smack the heck outta someone with, and legal to carry most anywhere i think) and a mini maglite ( a good cheap light, easy to carry and handy, a good product for the $$ imho) if ya have these 3 lights ya have most situations covered imho.....

MagLites are great when you need a good amount of light but don't want to burn up them expensive Lithium batteries. Still have some of them lying about...

Since about 1992 or so, SureFire 9P.

How did we ever get along without all of these items we now consider "necessities?"

Damned if I know...

Carry a neck knife, guess what one, has a Torquoise [Brightest] Photon II on it.

JSP Titanium Koppo Stick in Kubotan form [Keychain], has Red Photon II on it.

Red or Blue PAL Light [LED] in jacket/vest pocket. Excellent light.

Streamlight Stylus III, [Thanks S!] best Pen Light I have seen to date.

I carry a Streamlight Stinger on duty. I have had if for about 4 years, and it has served well. Not a problem with it since I got it. I am looking into getting an Ultrastinger next. I had an 8NX Commander from Sure Fire, and after a few problems with it sent it back to Sure Fire for replacement. They took care of me, and sent an 8AX which I traded for an M3 not long after.
Off duty, I usually carry a Streamlight Scorpion. I also have a Sure Fire G2, but like the Scorpion as the switch is recessed and is less likely to turn on while in a pocket. I have been thinking of getting an E2 or possibly a D2. I have not made up my mind yet, as I have not seen the light output ratings on each. I gave my girlfriend an E1 about a year ago and she has been very pleased with it. She alternates that and a Princeton Tec Blast or a UKE 2AAA penlight. They are all good lights, depending on what is needed.

1. Green Photon 2 on my keychain.
2. Surefire E1 in the glove compartment.
3. Surefire M6 next to the bed - we are not allowed guns in this country.
4. Mini maglight / CMG Tasklight next to the bed for reading at night (less intrusive than leaving the light on, so my wife does not kill me).
5. Surefire 6P in my everyday bag - this may change to an E1, but I have not seen a beamshaper for it.
6. Surefire M3 in my desk draw - you never know!
7. White Photon2 in my survival/bob kit.

I guess that about sums it up.

Regards,

Ed

The Surefire Centurion is always with me. It is the best little light I have ever had.
michael :D

i carry a surefire E1 all the time.
i went to the office one day and the lights went out. it was cool to be able to use it at work.
one of the things i did was put a washer in the rear screw part to stop the light from acidently screwing on. this happened once and the light got real hot plus burned alot of battery time up now it's only a press for light when i need it. which works alot better for me.

PiterM,
I've been carrying the E2 now for about 8 months. Prior to that it was a 6p. I find the E2 to be much smaller, just about as bright, and has a longer run time. The E2 is not as beefy as the 6p so I am reluctant to sit on it but is the best personal light by far from Surefire IMHO.

Surefire is set to come out with an enhanced E2 sometime soon in 2002 that will have a lock out tailcap and an anti-roll bezel. I have heard also that the lens will be pyrex but I can't yet confirm that for sure. It would be a little larger than the current E2 though and not as slim.

Rosanghal,
Your old 9p is replaced by the new D3. Nearly identical. You could also opt for the C3 (combat style) in black or hard anodized. They use all the same bulbs and batteries as your old 9p.

I have numerous old 6p's and 6R's so I just covert them to a 9p by adding an A19 battery adaptor to the 6p body. Then put in the p90/p91 bulb and presto...you have a 9p that can be converted back to a 6p if you wish or a 6R.

Surefire M2. Am playing with Lightwave 2000(4 LED) but for long time applications will need an LED with more light. Possibly Expedition(dive rated from) or Lighwave 4000. the surefire is for self defense. -Dick

Stinger on the job.
Maglites in cars.
Photon in pocket w/Micra always.
Scorpion (soon to be e2) in pocket at home at night, and when out and about.

For my own personal use, I'm never without my Surefire Centurion.
On duty, I carry a Surefire 9N on my belt kit.

Both work superbly and give the best light output I can currently make use of.

I carry a Streamlight Scorpion almost daily. Sometimes it rides in a mag pouch (either on my belt or in one of the 2 on my Galco Miami Classic shoulder rig), other times it's just shoved in a jacket pocket. I've had it for about 4-5 years now, and never had a problem, and NO bulbs have burned out/broken. Chews up lithium batteries like crazy though. :( Damn but they're spendy!
