What folder in the $400 - $500 range?

I just bought a Small Sebenza. I think it is a great EDC. Tough enough that I don't worry about using it. Plus the CS at Chris Reeve Knives is great and you can send it in to get reconditioned for a fee. That make me feel better about really using it. Just my two pennies.

I Have Both The Sebenza And Sng. I Have Found The Sng To Be Too Bulky For Edc, The Shape Is Awkward, Especially In A Pocket, And Is Difficult To Draw And Open. The Sebenza Is The Exact Opposite, Slim And Fast, Whether The Small Or Large (i Have Both). The Crk Is Easy To Handle And Doesn't Print Inside Your Pocket.

Also Consider Production Emersons Or Microtechs.

I would be looking at RJ Martin as well. His shop is not that far from me I don't think. I would love to visit. I like the Avenger recurve too...and really anything else he touches!

RJ makes one hell of a fine product!

I have two flippers and theyre great!

cannot say enough good about him!

:D  :)

Without doubt, the R.J. Martin. Nice guy, GREAT knives, and his knives bring a hefty amount of thought and execution along with them. I always liked his Q36 myself- and his Beanieballer (a fixed, neither of these knives are part of his current line-up).

Sincerely,
Anthony

Hello,

My two choices today.
Tom Ferry: Timascus & S30V blade, one beautifully light folder and a great cutter. Heck he makes up the timascus.
Scott Cook: Lochsa, an EDC winner.

I must be missing something, but why would anyone EDC a $500 knife!? If I had one, the only place it would ever see would be the inside of a display case.

What happens if you are cutting something and the knife falls out a window, or off a cliff or point-first on concrete, or - god forbid - it gets stolen?

Is $500 still a lot of money, or am I just really poor?

confused and astonished,

$500.00 is still a decent amount of money. Years ago I would have never considered paying that much for a knife. However, I generally beleive that you get what you pay for. I don't have a problem paying $900.00 for a gun, and I use them considerably less than my knives.

Luckily, I have yet to loose a knife or drop one out of a window. You could apply the same thinking to anything you own really. Why buy a house?...It might accidentally burn down...

I think you have to narrow it down by style. Some like Classic, some like Tactic and some buy expansive Art knives. If you ask me the question, I am automatically throwing a lot of tactical knives that is in the price range. Yet, tactical knife might not be your thing!

What style, what blade, what handle:confused:

I can tell you fore sure, I won't buy a fancy deco handle or blade knife. Simply, they made for LOOKING, not working. I don't want to think too much about my knife condition when I use it.
I looking for a user for sure; no fancy art knives. I want something that looks nice, but also performs well.

I'm basically searching for something that will be a capable EDC knife, but also a good SD knife as a last resort. I would prefer a frame lock, with titanium or SS construcion with or without G10 or CF scales. Blade style would be either recurve, wharncliffe or Sebenza like.

Im thinking either the RJ or the Sebenza, with a preference for the RJ.

go with RJ, then get a Sebenza!

now thats saying a lot because I have 11 Sebenzas *currently* the number changes frequently

Another vote here for RJ Martin, followed by Hinderer or a Sebenza. Can't go wrong with any of those three and they fit in the $475 range. If you can find one previously owned, even less than that.

You have to wait 3 years or catch Scott Cook at the door of a knife show, but IMO the best sub $500 folder is the Lacosha.

some good names have been thrown out - would like to toss out dav winch's name as well. not sure if he's taking anymore orders as he's headed back to his full time job soon, but i know of at least one dealer with some stock and they turn up for sale on occasion. pics here - http://www.davorama.com/

Have you looked at DB Fraley's site? I like especially frame lock versions of Havoc and Deluge, also Torrent fliper is awesome. Check out the Lightfoot Sharkeye made exclusively for knifeart. These two knifemakers and RJ Martin would be my top choices in this price range.
