Now theirs a catch, the folder has to be around 40 to 50 bucks (I've got a budget). Nothing too snazzy, but something to make up for the fact that I comepletely forgot to buy my father a present this Christmas, better late then never.

Any sudgestions would be very appreciated.

Spyderco Endura, I've got a few friends in the trade, they seem to all be switching to Spyders once they get a chance to handle them. My buddy loves the discontinued Standard model that's about Delica sized, I'd go with Endura(a little extra edge never hurt anyone).

Buck 110, The standard for many years. I'd also try to find a thumb stud for it though.

A good sized Whittler or Stockman. These seem to be popular with the older guys, the long blade for general work, the sheepsfoot for precision cutting, scribing, and stripping.

A Multi-tool, I'm seeing a lot of these, not so much as a work knife, but as a back up, so that they don't have to stop working to hunt down a bunch of different tools.

Spyderco Delica or Endura. I know a few guys in the construction biz and they all like one handed openers. Most of them carry CRKT's or cheap knock-offs. I'd recommed the Delica or Endura because you can get them with great blade steels and they are relatively inexpensive.

Spyderco Endura, for sure. keeps a great edge, very affordable, nice length, very sturdy, and wicked-easy to open with one hand.

Buck 110 with finger grooves and thumb stud from Smokey Mountain Knife Works.

SuperKnife would also be a good choice ..... maybe both.

CRKT M16-03

or

Kershaw Leek

Both should fit the under $50.00 limit, depending on where you buy from.

A carpenter is likely to really use his knife and so multiple blades of a wear resistant steel are a good choice. I would pick a 3-blade stockman model from Queen Cutlery with D2 alloy blades. You can get a good deal from Bullman cutlery at:

Another nice choice in your price range is the limited edition Spyderco Calypso Junior Lightweight with VG-10 alloy blade. Newgraham.com has them on their experimental page for around $40.00. The Calypso really cuts well and doesn't take up much pocket space. I think of it as an adult's knife.

I would recomend the victorinox soldier. this is a thin aluminium handled knife that has a main blade, bottle opener/large screw driver, can opener/small screw driver and a leather awl. The main blade is flat ground and cuts well. Best of all the price is right at approx. $24.00. This is a great little using knife and I feal it is one of the better buys in knives. The screw drivers will keep him from breaking the main blade.

Another vote for the Queen D2 stockman.
The 4" size is surprizingly slim. For extra sturdiness go for the 4 1/4" size, it has wider and thicker blades, but the bolsters are square.
They are available in smooth delrin, jigged delrin, cocobolo or jigged bone (resembling stag) handles.

Camillus electrician's knife. It's strong spearpoint blade and locking screwdriver blade will cut, screw, scrape and pry with no complaints or excuses. Ring for clipping to toolbelt or lanyard attachment. Best part: Around twenty bucks?

What kind of carpenter?
Does he work outside pouring concrete and building bridges? Union type
Or inside trimming houses.
For union type he could use a folder he can open with a gloved hand Inside type a traditional slip or a thumb opener would be appreciated.
One knife I gave to a plumber that he loves is the swiss army one with the aluminum scales. He's told me several times how mucg he uses that knife. Wants another, it's worn out.
Several years ago I gave the bear damascus folders to all the young tradesmen in the family and they still comment on them knives.
And still use them.
Nothing on the market like that I can think of now but at the time they were inexpensive.
You can't really go too wrong. I'm sure he'll love it a lot more than
the socks he'll get from grandma.
Is't it great giving knives?
I think i've enjoyed it much more than the people getting them.

A large Schrade stockman, and a SAK tinker. You can get them both for him for about $50, and you should be able to find them locally so you'll have them for Xmas.

How about one of the Buck Crosslocks with 2 blades? He will certainly use the knife, and with both spearpoint and sheepsfoot blades, your Father will love your choice.
