What folder would you give a carpenter?

It's late now, but on second thought a Swiss Army Knife or a multitool is a good choice. I like the adventurer model SAK or the shorter tinker model. A multitool with pliers could be handy, but may be a little heavy for some users. I also prefer SAK's for actual knife work.

Spyderco Endura
I have found my serrated endura useful for starting the kerf for a larger hand saw.

However something chisel ground might be useful as it can be used with a straightedge for marking lines. I Cannot think of any production knife off the top of my head that would fit the bill, but an Opinel is probably thin enough to do this; if not they are thin enough to easily grind or file the point into a chisel edge.

not to long ago I wanted to get my father a knife. I really wanted to get him a Spyderco Endura or benchmade Griptilian. Problem is this... he wouldn't appreciate them like they should. He is old school. So, I got him an old school, but still excellent knife. The Buck 110. Consider the style of the carpenter as well. Would he prefer something more traditional or would he appreciate modern materials and design? I felt like my dad would have appreciated an Endura or griptilian if he used it, but he is so set in his ways he would have put them in a drawer never to see the light of day.

I agree w/db. Stockman and/or a good SAK like the Tinker, Recruit, or a Mechanic if he doesn't use a multitool (which is ok, but doesn't replace the "real" tools he'll already be carrying). The pliers on the Mechanic may be useless for bigger jobs, but they're great for bending wire ties, pulling staples, and untying knots--all things I did frequently while doing that kind of work.
