What Folders Do You Pair With Khukuris?

I find the karda to be very useful as a small utility blade, but sometimes it's nice to have a folder along as well. Lately for me it has been an SAK of some sort, either a Rucksack, Huntsman, or Swisschamp; the Swisschamp has a special place in my pocket as well as my heart because my wife got it for me. I like tactical folders, but they really don't seem to go with the traditional materials found in an HI khukuri. So, what folders do you carry with your khukuris?

Spyderco Endura with full-serrated blade. Spyderco Spyder-Card in my wallet.

Before that, a Spyderco Delica with full-serrated and stainless steel handle (with a broken-off tip). Before that, a Spyderco Delica plain edge (with a broken-off tip). Sense a pattern (and I don't mean Spydercos)?

I'm not a big fan of folders of any make and the only decent locking folder I have is a Kershaw 1416 which was discontinued quite a while back.
My Barbie also has one she carries.

I have several slip joints including a SAK which is a Champ without the pliers.
But I haven't been able to find it for over a year and I know it's right next to my really nice Navaja made in Spain. I put them up in a safe place so I would know where they were.
Be dayumed if I can find them!!!! :grumpy:

The only folder I would carry that I feel I can really depend on would be a really good Balisong, but the really good ones are just too dayume much money for my blood.:(

However I do sometimes carry a smaller fixed blade such as the Marble's Woodcraft or Field craft. I'm very fond of both of them as well as my pre WW II Ideal that's the old 1095, but it's Old 1095 and that makes it an excellent knife even though it's pretty much retired.;)
The Marble's are all convex blade knives and are hard enough to make sparks with a good piece of flint. Works for me.:)

I have a Spyderco Lum chinese leaf(excellent Knife) for general use day to day. My problem is that, living in England, I don't get the chance to carry my HI AK at all!

Underhay, that really sucks. Are there no circumstances under which you can carry it? Not even camping and such?

I have a mountain man style folder and a SAK or leatherman. The mountin man style folder is cool, because the blade is locked with your grip.

I usaually have one of these for daily carry:

Buck Crosslock, with serrated sheepsfoot blade and spearpoint blade.
Colt M-16K tactical folder
Spyderco Endura, plain edge

Of the above, only the M-16K is stainless. the others are some nice carbon steel...The crosslock rocks, you destroy one blade, you have another! The sheepsfoot serrated is excellent for EMTs and such, for removing seatbelts, clothing, etc, when working next to a person, it is a nice safe blade.

I spend all my extra cash on HI products so i don't have the means to buy really expensive folders. i ALWAYS carry a Leatherman PST on my belt. I used to have th Leatherman Wave and liked the idea of being able to get tot he blade with out opening the pliers, but it was just too much. The PST has all the stuff i'd use on a daily basis and has pulled my butt out of the fire a few times.
the only other folders i carry are a cheapy S&W S.W.A.T. for everyday jobs. Or I carry the Harley Davidson edition Gerber Stud that my dad got me for my 18th b-day. Only use that for opening up packages or, God forbid, people. Oh, i also carry an old Buck 110 for abusive jobs from time to time.

Thanx

Used to carry a CRKT Mirage, till I lost it (or so my Uncle claims). Now Im carrying a Kershaw Ken Onion Blackout. The blade is harder than the CRKT (which was my only complaint about the thing since I like hard blades on folders), but the handle is too small which I never imagined could happen (Ive never considered my hands big, if anything Ive always thought them smallish, but then maybe Ive been growing and not noticed it). Anyways, use my folders mostly for cooking and finer work that the 12" AK cant do.

I carry a Charles Marlowe fraim lock. It is the most stout folder made and if you could hold this knife you would agree! It has a 3/16 inch thick blade ground very thin of BG42 steel and titainum handles and lock. It locks up so solid there is no play at all in the lock up. Charles has very reasonable prices on his knives also! Here is a picture of one of his folders:

Being that Charles uses 3/16 inch thick stock for his pocket knives makes them a good match for thick bladed khukuris.
Think of a marlowe folder as a Sebenza on steroids!!!;)

Chris,

Would you happen to have a pic of that Marlowe framelock? It sounds like just the thing I want :D Tried to order a Darrel Ralph EDC recently but he tells me he doesn't make them anymore...

A Case med stockman with amber bone scales and CV steel. A old German Inox pearl handled whittler. An Old Timer med stockman. A Boker large congress. I avoid stainless steel and non-natural handle materials when possible.

I usually carry some kind of slipjoint with carbon steel blades. A thin bladed, high-performance cutter is a good compliment to a khukuri.

If I'm deer hunting, I almost always carry my Marbles Fieldcraft.

I usually carry an inexpensive folder that is lightweight and if something happens to it (gets lost) won't bother me. Just go buy another. I like the CKRT Sampson's Kiss. It doesn't go particularly well with a khuk, but its a good knife to carry. My favorite folder that I own, and have many, is my SOG Tomcat. It's real beefy and extremely tough. A little on the heavy side for inside your pocket, but good for on your belt.

This is my honest-to-goodness EDC:

SWISSCHAMPXLT.jpg

It goes everywhere I go, and I honestly use it many times each day whether at work, home or out camping. I actually used it to get my car running the other day...but that's a whole different story.

For me, the ultimate setup is when this is paired up with my YCS. All my bases are completely covered.

BTW, "Merry-land" has very strict carry rules and, when sheathed, this knife is so wide it looks like a pager or cellphone...:D

Yes, Marlowe makes a nice knife for the price. I love those deep-bellied blades. I would have gladly traded my Sebenza for one of those...I tried to actually, but the guy wouldn't take it...

:p

I don't care for folders, especially in the field where they invariably collect crud in their handles or fall out of your pocket to be lost. The little hand ground file knife hanging around my neck serves as my "pocketknife". It's tough, sharp, secure, and easy to maintain. Still, I do have some folders I consider "field grade", they're the "twist lock" folders made by Opinel of France. They're cheap, simple, sturdy and light. The blades are made from a very good grade of carbon steel that's a cinch to get razor sharp, and the blade grind profile is such that these knives cut extremely well.

Going in the boonies for an extended period of time? You could do a lot worse than to pair up your khuk with a 4" fixed blade "Mora knife" (the Model#1, from either Frost's or Erikssons) and a good Opinel folder. You can get both of these from Ragweed Forge for the princely sum of $23.50 (and that's counting the 5 bucks for shipping). Hang the Mora knife on a thong around your neck, and then hone up the Opinel ludicrously sharp before sticking it in your first aid kit. Got a screwdriver, etc., in my weapons cleaning kit, and a can/bottle opener in my cooking kit, don't care to lug either one around in my pocket.;)
