What Folders Do You Pair With Khukuris?

Ditto on the opinel - how can you beat a great cutting knife for $5? (Usually $7 to $10, but sometimes you run into a sale). It helps if you have a bin to go through, so you can find one that's nice and tight. I always have a Leatherman micra on my keyc, and sometimes carry a Spyderco Delica (slightly bent tip).

Did you modify the handle on the bottom one, Sarge?

"Did you modify the handle on the bottom one, Sarge?"

Nope, that's one that Ragnar did (in addition to medieval reenactment he's into Revolutionary War reenactment). That said, I'm not too proud to mimic a good idea when I see it. Takes a few minutes whittling and sanding to make an Opinel's handle look like the one in the picture. I don't fiddle around with woodstain and such, just scorch the handle dark with a candle and rub in some beeswax and bacon grease to make it shine. Looks nice and rustic, kind of like me, crude but serviceable.:D

Chris,

Would you happen to have a pic of that Marlowe framelock? It sounds like just the thing I want :D Tried to order a Darrel Ralph EDC recently but he tells me he doesn't make them anymore...

I'm a BIG fan of the Mora knives, myself. Have had them for years, including the very one that Sarge posted the pic of. You can put one hell of an edge on them. Sheaths suck, but they're durable.

Also bought one of the Okapi lockbacks that Ragweed Forge offers. I just got it, but first impressions are, on the whole, positive. The blade is very sharp. The action and overall lightness of the knife take a little getting used to, but for 10 bucks, I like it.

Good one, Sarge. They're even more useful than I thought. Wish it had been a gopher, though. Have a lot more trouble with them, than the spiders.

"Mora Knives"

How could I not have thought of it sooner? Mora knives are dang near "monkey proof" when it comes to sharpening. Check out this link from Ragnar's site that explains sharpening knives with the "Scandinavian bevel"; http://www.ragweedforge.com/scanshrp.html
Any fellow forumites who no-kidding need a razor sharp knife, and have trouble getting one that way, should definitely try one. I always have one or two handy in camp for "fine cutting". They'll cut tomato slices so thin you can read a newspaper through it.;)

I don't get much occasion to carry fixed blades so the folder is really my bread and butter. Right now I have a plain edge Spyderco Rescue, an Old Timer Middleman and a Leatherman Micra. I have an Opinel #8 I'm rather fond of. In my bag are a Gerber multi-tool and an old SAK. I've also carried a Kershaw, Gerber and a CRKT. I think I'd like to get an SAK Tinker to replace my old SAK, which is heavy but also has sentimental value.

Moras are great. I have a KJ Eriksson mora that used to belong to my mother. I think it was her hunting knife. It's probably close to forty years old now. It had a bunch of corrosion on the blade when I got it as it had been stored in the leather sheath for quite some time. I cleaned up the blade and sharpened it with some sandpaper on a mouse pad. It is one razor sharp knife now. I use it in the kitchen all the time. It makes short work of everything I need to cut. In fact, I used it last night to slice up some carrots and onions for dinner. I use it so much that it never even gets put away-- it just sits around on the counter waiting to cut stuff. It also makes me think of my mom every time I use it.

That's a knife far better'n the steel it's made from Josh. Thanks for sharing that one.

Thanks, Sarge. My mom hated sharp knives  and she couldn't stand computers, but I'm sure she would have heartily approved of the folks who frequent the cantina. It's been just over a year since she passed away, and I still miss her every day. Having a few of her knives sure is a nice way to remember her.

I keep an old red Spyderco Endura that snapped it's plastic ( ok, FRN ) clip off. I had several earlier knives like the Buck folders get lost inside a couple months after I got them. When the Endura's clip broke I tossed it in the oddball/junk drawer and got a Tomcat. A half pound of weight and kraton grips. It was still in good shape a few years later when the kraton grips pulled off. Went and pulled the Endura out of the drawer, put the Tomcat in it, then filed the Endura's handle flat where the clip had been, filed and stoned the serrations off, and started carrying it in my pocket. Again. Also, bought a Sogwinder II - same as the Tomcat but different blade. On getting aquainted here on bladeforums, I grabbed a deal on a pair of the Kershaw 1416 folders with G10 scales and ATS-34 steel, the same ones Yvsa has for him and his wife. Then I traded for a pocket hobbit and turned the false edge on top into a sharpened swedge as razor sharp as the main edge.

The bottom line? 90% of the time it's the old Endura in my pocket.

My daily use folder is a spyderco Chinook. Before that was a spyderco native. And I always have a leatherman Supertool with me. Although, I have really been looking at SAKs lately. Only have 2, one I found laying on the side of the road and one my mom bought(with the Boy Scout emblem).
