What folders other than CRKT have "flippers"?

I love this feature, and carry my CRKTs almost exclusively because of it. Unfortunately, I'm not impressed with the steels they use. I don't think I've seen knives from any other makers like this, are they out there?

For flippers and assisted opening, buy Kershaw and don't look back.

The Leek is a good place to start.

Or the JYD-2 for something bigger.

Kershaw puts out amazing quality for what they charge.

The 2 BEST "flipper" knives I've found so far are both Kershaws:

*Junkyard Dog II...VERY fast to flip-open!
*Cyclone...This is actually a "speed-safe" model, but it still has a "flipper", and it can be set to open manually, via an "on/off" switch.

Both of these are VERY solid knives, with the Cyclone being my all-time favorite folder!...

Hijack, what qualify it as a flipper, does it have to open via finger pushing the tab alone, or push and turn wrist?

I have a storm II. I had to modify the retainer thing on lock frame cutout a bit, but now it opens awsome, I don't even touch the thumbstud anymore.

I carry a large CRKT flipper in my back pocket and a small sharp knife in my front pocket. CRKT's steel has not been a problem for me, but it all depends on what and how you use your knife. Whatever knife you choose, I'd avoid linerlock designs. The LAWKS feature makes all the difference and if the knife didn't have it, I wouldn't carry it.

A Spyderco Native in your front pocket might be the ticket if you're up to carrying two knives. Most flippers happen to be linerlocks and that makes it problematic when using knives other than those made by Columbia River.

Just out of curiosity, did you find the steel in the CRKT lacking or are you just looking for a better steel?

favorite flipper in my collection....

Let me help you out! :)

Kershaw Junkyard Dog or the Junkyard Dog II
Kershaw Lahar
Kershaw Groove
Kershaw Cyclone or the Mini Cyclone
Kershaw RAM (not released yet, but it will be awesome!)
Kershaw NRG2

SOG Vulcan
Sog Twitch

The Junkyard Dog II is my favorite!

Most flippers happen to be linerlocks and that makes it problematic when using knives other than those made by Columbia River.

Most of them might be liner locks, but most is not all. The Kershaw mini-Cyclone (Ti-ZDP) is a frame lock, the leek (all but the G-10 variants) are frame locks, the upcoming Shallot is a frame lock, etc... Several great flippers are available that are frame locks, not to mention the stud lock flippers that are available and all the frame lock customs out there.

While liner locks are not my favorite locks, I wouldn't call them problematic. Unless of course you are talking about the pre-LAWKS CRKT liner locks. From my understanding the CRKT liner lock is an inferior liner lock (read: worse than a normal liner lock) that led to the invention of the LAWKS feature. I guess that's cheaper than making a decent liner lock in the first place.

Just picked up my second Kershaw JYD 2 (a black one to go with my grey one) at a gun show the other day along with a mini Cyclone in ZPD. The JYD 2 is super smooth, requiring no wrist action at all while the JYD 1 is terrible in comparison because the blade is so light it needs a lot of wrist action. I don't like the huge clips on either though. I haven't played with the Cyclone much yet but a lot of people seem to like them. Kershaw seems to be where it's at currently. (Now if I could just get them to re assemble my Offset I'd be set.:()

OM, I'm not sure what you mean.

Kershaw was nice enough to send me G10 scales for my Al handled Offset, after sending me another set of the Al ones too, but there was a pin that wouldn't come out of my Al handles so I had to bastardize them by taking the liner out of the Al scales and put them into the G10 ones. But it didn't fit correctly so I've got a 5 pound bag of Offset parts but no complete knife. I had sent some emails to Kershaws support email and then stopped getting replies so I kinda gave up on it. It just needs to be put together with the G10 handles for the most part.:o

Just to be clear, Thomas had offered to do this personally a year or two ago but I kinda lipped off because I'm pissy and never took him up on it. Which is my bad definitely, not Kershaw's or Thomas's. Like I've said, Kershaw is the company to beat now by far as far as production models go.
