What folding knife for my birthday?

If you don't mind a 4.5" blade I say take a look at a knife I have, the Fox knives "Deimos". The micarta handled version, and you can only get the micarta handled version with a black blade. This is a beefy knife, a linerlock with .060" thick steel liners that are very strong at lockup, which is how I like it.
