Before heading out on a days trek, what do you have for breakfast ? Im hypoglycemic, my blood sugar crashes. A ham, egg ,and cheese on whole wheat has served me the best. I dont eat sugar unless I need it, after that its a struggle to keep blood sugar from yoyoing.

Yeah, protein, fat, and carbs. Eggs with oatmeal or beans, and peanut butter and banana on toast is ideal for me. I prefer hot food for breakfast too, I guess as a comfort thing, as opposed to cereal and a sandwich or something.

:EDIT: Scrambled eggs with peanut butter on toast is absolutley delicious:thumbup:

My homemade chile, made from scratch, lasts for days.... at least the gas does. No bear spray needed!

Stainz

PS I borrow oats, as a breakfast food, for a couple of hours - but the hunger is gone.

Breakfast at home :Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats
Couple fried eggs

On the trail: Home-meade GORP stuff. Almonds, rasins, sunflowerseeds, dried
pineapple ,peanut M+M's.

pasta with sausage mixed in. the energy release from pasta is more gradual & will slow down a crash.peanut butter on wheat bread to carry in your pocket is great if you are out an extended time.

I often keep a flask of honey on me to replenish carbs quickly when I am moving fast. I find if I eat a fatty breakfast, the honey will keep me going a long while.

DB, my wife is the same, low blood sugar if she does not eat. We keep peanut butter&crackers, peanut M&M's, pkgs. of nuts, etc. in the glove boxes, tackle boxes, camera bags, camping boxes, just about anything that goes with us out of the house. She usually eats pasta, cheese items, eggs, anything along that line before we leave. Might want to throw some bags of peanuts in your pack just in case.
Be safe.

Yeah, for most of us, peanut butter, granola or cereal bars will do. However, since you have a special condition, I think you should really ask a nutritionist about this, he can recommend you a proper diet according to your glucose needs and the calories you'll be burning on your activities.

I've seen a couple people with hypoglycemia get sick while doing sports because they don't follow a proper diet.

Talking about food, I read somewhere that jelly beans make a great emergency food, since they give you good energy and they don't take a lot of water to be digested, what do you think? I usually just go for a granola bar or chocolate bar for emergencies.

I have to have protein with my breakfast or I'll be starving again within 2 hours, even if I had a massive stack of pancakes or a huge bowl of cereal.

Generally that means a three egg omelette and toast or a bagel. Quite often, I just have lunch for breakfast. Leftover chili or spicy lentils over whatever starch is in the fridge. Brown rice or pasta usually, but I have used shredded whole wheat bread when nothing else is around and I'm feeling lazy.

A combo for the trail that I recently found is whole wheat english muffins with peanut butter alongside some jerky. For a cold meal, it keeps me surprisingly full.

Alot of time on the trail i would have half a bagel some cheese and sausage. On the first day i would also carry a tomato. That would keep me going all day long. I dont like to eat big lunch on the trail as it slows me down. I would also carry some honey sticks. I would also have some Oats or rehydrated beans and add some cheese in there. Heck i got alot of ideas that i like to eat on trail. But i always try to mix some fat, protein, carbon, and try to make it as healthy as i can.

Breakfast before heading out would be a bowl of grits with cheese, stir in two eggs over easy and bacon. Can't forego the bacon. And toast with butter and honey with coffee.

multi grain bagel with a couple of slabs of bacon, slice of tomato and some cream cheese

Fast and Furious calories

Otherwise a handful of Cheerios or Wheaties suffices

RedBeAR15 you and me would get along very well togher lol.. Try some spicy sausage next time instead of bacon. You can always add some fresh garlic in there.... Now i need to go hiking just to have a reason to eat something good.
