What Forum Member Helped you in 2011?

Nathan the Machinist - I'm still reeling from his Dunning-Kruger Effect quote. It's rare that something keeps me laughing months after the fact. As far as I am concerned, he wins for "Best Burn" of 2011.

Also, his post about using bondo as a jig for holding odd shaped parts at odd angles for machining was amazing. Seems so simple, but I would have never in a million years thought of doing it.

I want to thank every single one of you!! Bladeforums is such an awesome site! I love being able to share the passion of the craft here!! Ive talked everyones ears off around me about knives, all the family members including in-laws have knives, heck my kids arent even as excited to see a new blade, BUT i can fire up the ol compaq hit the favorite button, and be right here amongst my peers, taking in the topics, finding new inspiration, getting involved in spirited debates, realizing how far i still have to go to get were i wanna be as a maker, and making REAL friends in the process!! We are a phraternity we are Bladeforums!!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!:D

Sounds familliar.
My ex once tolde me: now for the rest of the day you can talk about thatever you want exept for knives.
I was waving a newly bought bar of D2 around :p

I Recently found the Annual "Best Bowie" Thread over in Custom Knives and have been drawing bowies like crazy! I had the thought why not have a 2011 "Blade Forum MVP" thread?

Soooo... Consider those that have been named thus far "Nominated" and we will take other nominations until Year End! So if there is anyone you would like to add before the year ends please post them up Today!

Between now and then I will try to figure a way to organize the voting system. Anyone willing to help feel free to contact me via PM.

As far as I am concerned we are all winners. Where else can we go to talk knives, with other people that actually understand what we are talking about? I do not know how many times I have heard from people I though were knife people, about the "blood groove". Each one has there own description of it's benefits, none of which are to lighten/balance the blade. I nominate you all!

In terms of MVP nominations, my vote is solidly behind Stacy Apelt. Among a crowded field of selfless craftsmen who enthusiastically share all they know, he continually exhibits leadership that benefits us all. Not only in benefitting our craft, but also in the difficult task of keeping all these sparkmakers, hammer-jockeys, newbies and wannabes in some semblance of order. Corralling all these ego's and disparate opinions must be like herding cats.

Let me just add that I'm tremendously flattered, humbled and grateful to have been briefly mentioned in this thread. I've not attained the skill-level, experience or class of the best, but I aspire to do so. It pleases me to feel that I helped in some small way. I'm proud to be a very small fish in a very large pond. Thanks, guys :)

+1. Stacy is patient beyond belief, as evidenced by the fact that I made it through the newbie KITH with no mental breakdowns.

I didn't nominate KC only because he's not very active on this forum these days. I do have two things to say about him, regardless:
  • Pay attention when he speaks or posts. He knows exactly what he's doing, and can prove it.
  • Don't miss a chance to talk to him in person. He is bright, personable, and funny.

I will pitch in a little for materials if someone wants to do a "MVP" knife. I would do it all myself but I would have to name it the dust collector because thats all it would do.

Kevin's contributions both in the knowledge he dispenses and the information he has put in the stickies, and cleaning up a bunch of threads into his"working with the Three Steel Types" makes up for his recent lack of continuous presence.

I didn't know this was turned into a vote.

If I have to nominate one member for MVP, it would have to be Nick(he was at the top of my list, anyway.) Not because he has contributed any more than someone like Kevin but because he is actively putting himself and his processes out there. Kevin is a teacher... Stacy is a teacher.... Nick seems to be stepping out of his comfort zone making these videos and I commend him for it. Besides, you can't really nominate Stacy for MVP... he works here! That's like nominating a waitress at Hooters for best short-shorts of the year.... it's her job....... only in our case, it's an oldman in a kilt... and there's no beer n wings that come with those hairy legs.

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Everyone on this site is a big help, but I've had more direct contact with these makers, who were awesome and showed me a thing or two:

Pohan Leu, Ray Laconico, Jonathan Mitchell, Sam Eddleman

Thank you everyone!

I am also very happy and humbled to have been mentioned a few times on this thread.
There are so many to thank that I usually don't post for fear of forgetting someone but this time I'll give it a try:

Fred Rowe for his constant encouragement, feedback and honesty.

Matthew Gregory for sending me a great care package with all kind of knifemaking goodies that I sadly haven't tried yet. But it is sitting in plain view in my shop just waiting for me to get more shop time.

Frank Niro for helping me get started on folders with just about everything short of making the knife for me. Oh and also for getting me hooked on keyless drill chucks. ;)

RyanW and Mike Davis: For being the only ones on my mailing list, in case I ever sell a knife, and for making me believe, if only for a brief moment, that I make nice stuff. ;) Also Mike for sending me a nice bunch of wood that I sadly haven't start using yet. I see a pattern here. :(

Greg (tryppyr) for keeping me company in the “a little out there” section. :p

Sam (The Count) for quick and detailed responses on EVERY DARN THING known to man! :D

Rick Marchand for making me smile with almost every post. Even if he doesn't like me that much. :(

Nick Wheeler & Bruce Bump for being so generous with their high-end knowledge.

Phil Dwyer for his knowledge but even more for being so darn NICE that you can even feel it through an Internet connection. ;)

Larry Shaughnessy for his wood experience and sending me a gorgeous set of scales.

Paul Indelicato for making me believe that I have a little creativity in me. Now if I could only do the same for him. :(

Salem Straub also for his quick help and support.

Nathan the Machinist & Brian Fellhoelter for their machining input, priceless to a guy who used to solve problems by getting a bigger hammer.

Stacy, well no need to explain here. ;)

Denis Paish for supplying me with some super nice stabilized wood. I'll buy some more as soon as I have some play money handy.

Mike Quesenberry for making inspiring knives.

Page (sunshadow) for his expert advice with many things but especially jewelry making.

Pat (pff) for keeping chat alive and doing a great job of overseeing everything and Matt (MJ Hofbauer), Dan (Yoda4561) and Sean (SSheperd) for their regular camaraderie in chat.

I may have forgotten some and if so I apologize.

Thanks to all of you!

my first Double post, must be the new computer for Christmas...

But since I am here, I wanted to also mention Mike Turner. he has also been very generous with materials and knowledge when I need it. I am looking forward to joining him in April with a few fellow Forumites for a lesson in Forging after the Oregon knife show! Thanks Mike.
