What Genre of knives is on its way up.....and what's on its way down ? :)

As far as stacked handles, I like the micarta vs leather... no eventual sharp edges of metal shim material. Canvas micarta end grain looks cool too.

Here's some of Mike's stacked micarta.

I want one of those!

On the subject of trends, on instagram there is a ton of younger guys getting into forging...whether bladesmithing or blacksmithing. With a new surge of interest in "handmade" and old school techniques. Now, this may not be a new interest in high end buyers, and doesn't mean cowboy knives are on the way up, but I see a new appreciation for hand forged goods.

Of course the tactical stuff is overwhelming on instagram, but the way I see it forged tactical stuff is pretty bad ass, and bad ass doesn't really ever go out of style.

You are talking about a generation that doesn't know what getting into a fist fight is.....where is the badass in that?

It's like woman calling another woman "hot".....unless she is banging her, what does she know about "hot"?

Steven, that's true....very sad, but true about the pussification of the younger generation. Not all of em, but it's pretty rampant.

A lot of them seem almost offended, if not amused by what I would consider a badass knife, saying "why would you need a knife like that?"

I guess in today's society, particularly with regard to more urban settings, a guy would be smart to make a pile of little friendly, unassuming bushcraft knives or edc's...as not to offend the youngsters, sending them to their safe place.

I just don't care to do that. Guess I'm getting old.

Tad

When I was growing up, it was a free for all.

The badasses won....were they the smartest? Hell no! But what they were is the last people the teachers would want to f**k with.

That my friends is bad ass, and I can say from personal experience, Joe Paranee is BADASS!!!

I got the one from you Tad, still do!

Don't worry, if it needs to be used, it will be.....and it as well, is BADASS!!!

First off great thread; i really found it quite interesting!

i'm 20 years old and i make and sell forged knives; maybe a few of you saw the WIP thread that RogerP started for me a month or so back....
Anyhow, I think of knives like i do cars, and i love the restomod/protouring scene. You know, big old slow cars with sloppy steering linkage and terrible stance... (the stuff my dad drove with hideous stripes and terrible rake) :barf: :p However, you add a little paint here n there, update the suspension and drivetrain, bolt on some nice wheels with a mean stance, add some carbon and stainless embellishments etc.... and just like that we have completely changed the look and feel of the car, but you have all the class and mojo of a timeless vehicle!

Same with knives. I L O V E old "ABS style" blades and respect the guys that got the custom knife community to where it is today, but i want to add a bit of flash and style into those designs, to pump some new blood into them!

prime examples of what I've mentioned above would be makers like....
Sam Lurquin
Ben Seward
Ben Breda
Erik Markman
Nick Wheeler
Tad Lynch
and many more (just off the top of my head!)

just my 2c LOL

I think Guys like them, because of the designs/style's their pushing, are the future of high end forged knives.

I agree and I believe I am the number one proponent of forged badass and the folks that do it :)

The hi performance forged blade will live again :)

so, 'badass' is a genre?

Um... yeah.

Let me explain.

When I made this knife I was wussing out, got a paper cut and it came out like this.

For this knife I listened to Slayer and actually kicked this dude's butt while doing the swedge grind.
