The other glove thread made me remember something.

I usually wear leather roper gloves in the winter, or for general work. I recently lost my old pair, and I went and bought a new pair. Dang things are stiff and new. I miss my ol broke in pair. Any tricks for a speedy break in?

I wear the USGI wool liners, with the fingertips cut off, and the thumb left intact, over which, I wear nitrle/latex at work, then my ropers on the top layer.

Has worked well for me for years.

What gloves do you wear? Leather? Synthetic? Gortex? Wool? Fleece?

Thinking about an upgrade to my setup.

Out here its doesnt really matter, its allways cold, right now its minus 25* C and there is a wind chill, so its more like minus 30. Last night it was around -40* with wind chill. So, I have come to like heavy work gloves with a good liner, eiher wool or fleece or something, the only thing I dont like about fleece is it doesnt last long in gloves but it is warm while there still good.

Other than that, or on a good day (-15*c) I wear a pair of Rocky gloves, their warm easy to work with and are durable. I've had them for a few years now.

My wife bought me two pair of West Chester leather gloves. When they are dirty I run them through the washer, let dry, and they are just as soft as when new. Glad you posted this thread as I need to buy several more pair of these...

I use these:

Primeloft mittens from MEC - they kick ass and insulate even when wet.

I hate bulky gloves...it probably helps that the temperatures don't get down to the single digits here, but I've always hated the big'ol ski gloves.

My favorites:

1) Geier kangaroo leather gloves (simply the best for being thin and tough)
2) Wool fingerless gloves and/or my Wool Glomitts (Glomitts look gay but work:D)
3) Simple glove liners (I have a couple pair from Cabelas that are great)
4) Southwest Motorsports "Vent" gloves...these are my summer field gloves

Kangaroo leather is excellent and when they get wet and then dry out, they don't get very stiff; I absolutely love mine.

I like the fingerless gloves for most of my day hikes; the Glomitts I've used for hunting in colder weather. I can even double up a little and put my glove liners under my Glomitts when it's really cold.

The "Vent" gloves are great for summer protection without getting too hot. I used a pair through a 15 month deployment to Iraq and they're still going strong!

It gets cold here ROCK, and I still hate bulky gloves. I cant wear em. Im gonna check out them kangaroo ones...

I have a few pairs but I mainly wear my Marmot Work gloves. I also have a pair of Filson Merino liners, Outdoor Research Flurry gloves and a few sets of heavy duty leather ones. As for mitts, Marmot Expedition are the way to go. Big, puffy and super warm.

Ironclad Icons or Heavy Utilities
Wool Fingerless
and an odd pair of ski type (but thinner) I got out of the lost and found. No name brand, but great so far.

When appraising on winter mornings I use these:

I post these because they are called the "headwind" model, but are not wind proof, and wanted to pass along the warning. If it got cold here more often (PHX,AZ) I would definately look for something more hardcore.

+1 on kangaroo leather. I have some motorcycle gloves that are kangaroo and I can't say enough good about them.

I have a variety of gloves, everything from liners to shells. The ones I wear the most are probably the elk skin with a thin lining. The warmest are probably an old pair of Pearl Izumi 'lobster' gloves.

All sorts: Various leather gloves, big Gortex gloves with Thinsulate, neoprene gloves, rubber gloves, a couple of pairs of knitted with Thinsulate in, silk liners, meraklon liners. Mostly in the sticks simple fleece gloves and some heavy duty gardening gloves. A couple of pairs of spare fleece gloves weigh very little and the gardening gloves are strangely adept at handling thorns, spikes and whatnot one finds in the sticks.

I just like to use wool liners and mitts. Gloves that are actually warm are too bulky and you have to take them off to do fine stuff anyway, may as well wear mitts, and liners to keep your skin from freezing when you do remove them.

Kansas, rag wool fingerless sometimes thin deerskin gloves. I hate to have so much bulk around my hands that it takes works to make a fist.

I've got some gore-tex ski gloves for the real cold but for just everyday stuff I wear Footjoy winter golf gloves. They fit perfectly, are warm enough and you can do just about anything with them on.

More often than not I wear BHI Hellstorm Aviator gloves...they give up very little in the way of dexterity while providing good warmth and protection for their light weight.

I wear just the brown jersey gloves until it gets to cold for them, then I wear the leather choppers mits with wool liners. I basically can't do much with gloves heavier that the the jerseys. I carry about three pair keeping a couple pair inside my coat to have them warmed up. It gets mighty cold in North Dakota.

A lot of the time I wear some leather gloves with 40 gram thinsulate I got from wal-mart. They work fairly well.

Usually, though, I wear a pair of 15-dollar work gloves. Leather, canvas, and fleece. They're tough as can be and keep me plenty warm as long as it's not ridiculously cold and I'm not sitting still for a long time. Will probably get a pair of good liner gloves sometime, that will help with extreme cold.
