i am new to this forum and have no knife making experience to date. I am wondering what type of glue is suitable for laminating walnut to maple for knife handles? I am going to attempt a hidden tang blade attached to 3 ply handle, with a scandi style blade. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks

I don't see why wood glue wouldn't work. Seriously, you should be asking your local wood experts, but I'm pretty sure that wood glue plus dowels or better yet, pins, should work find. Its usually sandable and tough. You want to do some quick research on what types there are. You might find a particular wood glue just for hardwoods.

Based on the "Glue Wars 2" thread I would say Gorilla glue. On joints where at least one side was porous and able to hold some moisture to fully activate the glue, it equalled any other glue type in the test IIRC.

There is a Gorilla Wood Glue now. Probably worth looking into -- though I think I'd still go with the regular Gorilla glue for this sort of thing.

I've used gorilla glue on wood only projects before and I wouldn't recomend it. The reason is that you need to have both joining surfaces just damp enough for the glue to work. If you get the piece too wet, it can cause the wood to expand and have some warping issues as it dries. If its not wet enough, it doesn't hold that well.

Wood glue is just much simplier to use in my opinion. Esspecially if you're laminating.

I was also also concerned w what would happen if the knife gets wet? In your opinions does wood glue do alright if the knife gets wet?

Thanks for the quick replies.

Titebond III is what I use for most of my projects. Waterproof and FDA approved for contact with food. No issues with my cutting boards.
