Remember to keep the price difference between U.S. dollars and CAD in mind. A $70 U.S. knife is usually going to be $100+ CAD.
The Spyderco Tenacious would be a very good starting point. It gives you a good feel for G-10 and a decently made liner lock. From there I'd look into the Benchmade Griptillian and a Kershaw... something. They have so many great knives in the $50-$60 (U.S.) price range it's hard to recommend any one over the others.
After the first few, once you have an idea of what size you prefer, and features you specifically like, then I'd take the plunge and get something really nice.
I'd stick with Benchmade/Spyderco/Kershaw for the first little while. They make top notch knives more consistently than just about anyone else.
Where to shop? I've found Warriors and Wonders (
http://www.warriorsandwonders.com/) to be the best Spyderco dealer in the country. They carry other brands as well (Kershaw, SOG, Ka-bar), but not as extensively.
You can also check out Le Baron if you live in southern Ontario. They have good prices on what they carry.
Other than that, you'll probably have to order from the U.S. (which is just about your only option for Benchmade). New Graham Knives (
http://newgraham.com/store/) is a great place to shop. I also do a lot of business with KnifeWorks (
http://www.knifeworks.com/).
Just make sure they tighten the pivot (make sure you buy knives with an adjustable pivot) and shipping shouldnt be a problem.
Lastly make sure you dont get in trouble. A knife is always a tool and never a weapon. Know the laws of your local area, there can be a lot of funny stipulations depending on where you live.
