What got you Hooked on CR Knives?

I want to change my answer.
What first got me into CRK's was the "Calvary" graphics on a Sebenza that I saw here in the picture thread.
I am a Christian and love the Lord. When I saw that my heart melted. I knew nothing of CRK and about fell out of my chair when I found out how much it was going to cost me to acquire this knife. I searched for about 2 months for that knife without any luck then TallPaul on here contacted me with an offer. One week later I had a small Regular with Lisa's unique "Calvary" knife. Shortly after I learned I could order direct form CRK and about 6 months later I had a "Calvary" in a LArge 21.
I bought for the artwork but now I buy for the quality of the knife and company.

I got a large Sebbie. It is plain, simple, and elegant. Easy to take apart, easy to clean. Zero play in the construction. I ordered a ladder Damascus blade and I can hardly wait until it comes in!! Very very happy. Excellent customer service!

Now I have 9 Mnandis, 1 Large and one Small Regular Sebenza, and a Shadow IV one-piece...

Kind regards,

I bought this one about 5 years ago to see if Sebs were worth the money:

Since then, I have acquired 15 CRK's total (10 Sebs, 4 Mnandis, 1 Zaan) -- YES, they're worth the money!

For me it was about buying the best quality dependible knife that would out do my needs. I had read about the "Sebenza" on a number of gun sites and just had to see what the hype was about. My first and without a doubt favorite CRK is my Large Regular Sebenza. I bought this knife prior to ever handling a sebenza. It honestly was the most expensive knife that I had ever bought. Once I had it in my hand, I was a believer. I still have this knife and actually had it engraved by CRK last year. This knife will live with me forever. I have several CRK knives now, but the first is still my favorite.

My first sebenza was purchased in NYC from the man himself, it was 1994 and the Roosevelt Hotel is where the knife show was being held. I picked up a large sebenza with a ats34 blade and a P stamped on the Ti, this is the folder that I judge every other folder by. Chris Reeve makes knives that you would reach for, if your life dependent on it.

Interesting responses.

I just recently bought my first Sebenza. I have been a knife collector for years, and always balked at the high price of CRK products, despite the worldwide glowing reports.
The A$-US$ exchange rate finally swung me to my first purchase. Why?
Every collector wants to have the best reputation, highest quality object of their collection.
With the Sebenza, I think I have that, although I still want a Randall fixed blade.

Bought a sebenza to see what all the hype was about, fell in love and bought many more:) Seems to be the ongoing theme with these CRK knives.

Back in 1989 I bought a new South African made Aviator for $40Aust. I was hooked:D

I first decided that a Sabenza was on my bucket list some time in the mid 1980's when I met Chris at the Pomona gun show. It took me many years to be in a position to afford to get one, now I have three.
A Umnumzaan, Small black Micarta Classic and a Small Insingo.

I plan on a large Insingo in the next few months, I am waiting to see if they will be available in a unique graphic. If the "right" unique graphic in a regular Sebenza comes along I would not turn it down. Later this year a Mnandi with Damascus, I have not decided on the scales... but that is half the fun. :D

Read abut them in Blade 24 years ago, bought my first (a one piece Aviator) 11 years ago and became so obsessed that I had myself institutionalised 9 1/2 years ago.

Matt, if by "institutionalized" you mean "strapped to the CR grinder because you're so darn talented", then that's the best story in this thread!

I attended a knife sharpening seminar that Chris was putting on once he got settled into the U.S., and won the door prize (a sharpening system :) ). Shortly after that, I purchased Mountaineer II #52 in 1990 was the start if it for me. I would have to say that the clincher was Sebenza P184 in 1993 -- my EDC until my 1996 large regular Sebenza #63 replaced it as my current EDC.

A few things:

1) Evolution of the hobby - most of us evolve in our tastes and wants in a knife.
2) CRK reputation - CRK has been a dominant force in the knife making world for years - you don't get there by making junk.
3) My desire for well constructed things - especially in this "disposable" world. CRK knives are made to last a lifetime.
4) They work well and cut well - they do what they are designed to do. Period.

I couldn't say it any better. The first and fourth points are especially true.

Pure engineering is what got me about CRK products , particularly the Sebenza.
I have had a few over the years and retained a core of old school models. My first was an ATS 34 small Seb', I still have it .
