what got you interested in outdoor survival?

I used to do a lot of camping when I was younger, then MA took over my life, and it wasn't until Ray Mears started his TV series many years later that the Camping/Bushcraft side of me was re-awakened, and now my eldest wants to be a Royal Marine Commando in a couple of years, so its of out into the wood and moorlands, and we are realy enjoying it.

Well, it started when I read Gary Paulsen's books, mainly Hatchet, Brians winter, the river, Brians return, the Transall Saga, and Essays of fishing and hunting.:)

Tunnel in the Sky is also another that got me interested. This story would make any kid get into it. :) Glad I own that book.

When I was little my Dad always brought home movies for us to watch. My dad is not an outdoorsman, but one day he brought home a movie, which I think was called a "long way from home". A boy, and his dad get in a bad storm at sea. His dad somehow got rescued while the boy made it to shore. He had a dog, and a "swiss army type knife". He survived. I wish I could find that movie to put in my collection, it was really the first thing that got me interested, before I read Gary paulsen in grade school.

My dad isn't an outdoorsman, several things I had to overcome in my childhood. I begged and begged for a pocketknife when I was 8, and finally my Dad let me have one. I don't know what knife it was, or if I still have it, but this was an important milestone in my life towards being an outdoorsman.

Got into hunting a couple of years ago, got my first gun for 8th grade graduation. This was an important milestone for me. An 870 for graduation is an awesome gift. :) It started my favorite pasttime: HUNTING. With this increase in being in the outdoors, I started to get more into all aspects of the outdoors, including wilderness survival. Reading Field and Stream's articles about survival really peaked my interest. Hunting also gave me time to spend with my Dad, who although won't shoot the animals, goes out with me deer hunting and such. It's a good time to spend with family. :)

A couple of years later, a few books read and bought, time spent reading on the net, and some Ron Hood DVD's, I am hooked on the outdoors. Theres no turning back now. :)
