What got you started on Spyderco? What got the "Spydie bug" into you?

(Yes, I know it's an old topic.)

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm a recent convert to Spyderco knives; got my first one last month (a Cat), and it's very quickly become part of my EDC -- or, at least, EDC rotation (it currently shares with a Squeak now -- Yes, I've REALLY come to enjoy Spydies!). On going through some of the more recent topics on the board, I've seen a few others mention their first Spydies -- sometimes a Tenacious, sometimes an Endura or Delica, and occasionally some other model. I've also noticed -- on some of these mentions -- that their first Spyderco may not have impressed them much . . . but a later one did (and THAT is what got them started on the path to Spyderco Nirvana :D and/or financial ruin from too many blade purchases ;) ).

Hence the topic. What was your first Spyderco? And was it what got you hooked, or did maybe another blade purchase "seal your fate?" INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW!! (or, at least, this n00b does)

A Para 2 last November. That lead to three other Spydercos.

Then I got my Military ( my hands down favorite). That lead to two more Spydercos, with a third due in my mail today or tomorrow.

The only other one I feel I "need " to have is a Gayle Bradley 2 when it comes out.

The P'Kal six months ago.....four thousand dollars later I'm starting to thin the herd and concentrate on a few favourites.

My first was a Ti/Damascus Delica which I like based on looks alone. The Spyderco Damascus suckered me in and now I am hooked. Since then I have bought and traded a few but I am completely in love with the Domino. It hasn't left my pocket since I got it.

I purchased a Caly 3 ZDP189 in 2006. I am up to around 42-3? I have a few favorites - a bunch of Militaries, quite a few Para 1's and 2's, Manix - both original 80's and 95's as well as the 2's, Enduras and Stretches. Then a lot of singles that were impossible to say no to. Serrated Ayoob, Rhino Horn Lil Temp, Lionspy, Slysz bowie, Southard, Rock Lobster, etc. Many that I wish I had purchased before they got too pricey. Great company, great owners, super knives - I would have a hard time finding something as fun to spend my mad money on as Spyderco knives. I have discovered that I am not overly fond of the smaller Spydercos - the Caly 3 is as small as I like to carry. To each his own.

Recently converted also, it was a Delica for me. Now have my eye on a PM2 and the Manix is also creating some interest.

Recent convert here as well....bought a Para 2 Black w/ Satin blade last week and already have a Para 2 in Camo w/ black blade in the mail. Considering buying a Gayle Bradley next since I live in Texas, but the Taiwan made thing is throwing me off a bit. LOL! I know they're great blades still, but if you're going to put a Texas state logo on a blade, it damn well should be made in USA.

My first Spyderco was my Sharpmaker, which I purchased in October 2005. Later in November I bought Native just to see what is S30V about. But I got a bug from my second Spydie: Kopa Cocobolo. This knife caused a chain Spyderco reaction, which still going.

Another new Spyderco convert. My first (an only so far) is the Resilience, since I needed a large affordable "workhorse" EDC folder. Great blade for the price, and I am so pleased with it that next on the list is the Sharpmaker and a Tenacious, and probably a Delica will follow.

The higher-priced offerings will have to wait awhile, but I am certainly "lusting" after them ;)

Best wishes.

What got me started? I was searching for a rust proof fishing knife. Ran across the salt line and bought a yellow Dragonfly 2. That was the beginning of the end for me. ;)

I was also looking for a rust proof knife. Something I could keep on my board shorts, get salt water, sweat, and not have to worry about it. I bought a Pacific, and a Tasman. The Tasman with serrations was the knife that sealed the deal for me. Its a great utilitarian design, and I dont feel bad about putting it to work. The pacific is nice, just maybe a tad to big for what I was looking for, and the Tasman just pockets nicely. Also, once I learned how to "flick" the Tasman took on a whole new life.

Rewind to 1993, when a coworker showed me this new knife he had just bought and handed me an Endura. First time I'd ever seen a Spyderco and I was enchanted from the moment I slid my thumb into the hole and opened it one handed. The gnarly Spyderedge was so progressive and I had never seen a knife like that before.

Fast forward to 2015, and while I don't have my very first Endura (old school with the very thin clip that I foolishly gave away), I do have two first generation Enduras, a stainless Endura from around 2000, and an Endura 4 with the FFG blade, along with a Salt H1 and a Native. It's time to get the PM2, and my wife knows I've been eyeballing it. I'm Spyderco for life.

My first was a Delica. Wasn't a great first impression as it felt very gritty when opening and there was a bit of blade play. That being said, I've thought about giving it another try. A year or so later, I picked up a Manix 2 and was very impressed with the quality. The knife just wasn't for me so I ended up selling it. I currently own a G10 Native 5 and an S35VN Para 2 and love them both.

I think what really got things rolling was the combination of the Sharpmaker and the Endura.

For me it was pre-Internet, back in the early 90's. I read Combat Handgun magazine then, and Massad Ayoob talked about Spyderco's in his articles, and Spyderco ran a small ad in the magazine. I found a plain edge SS Police model at a local gunshow and was hooked! Still have it too :D

Bought the Tenacious then the Ambitious back in 2010. But it was not until I got the super blue Caly 3.5 and 20CP PM2 was I completely bitten. Since then I have only bought Spydies.
