i use a jungle hammock from brigade. it has two layers which you can get in between for extra warmth and also it holds a mat very well. very little space is taken up with this in a pack.
i have used mine in cold weather with a blanket and slept very comfortably. i attach a tarp over a guide line to make an a-frame for wind and rain protection and i can hang a light and knife off of the line for easy reach at night.
i keep my pack under me just to the point where i am resting on it. this brings me to a big negative on hammocks. if you suffer from motion sickness like me all that swinging can cause some nasty side effects meaning :barf:
