What happened to country music?

Hey, Mongo - great taste in music! Next you'll be telling me that you're a fan of...."Western Swing ain't dead, it's____________________!"

(fill in the blank)

Another one of my top favorites!

ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL! I was just listening to them yesterday.

They are good.

I still think that Bob Wills is the king of country and especially western swing-since he invented it and has never been outdone. Leon Mac Cauliffe was a major part of it with his steel guitar.

Anyone that likes Merle Haggard's vocal style, should listen to old Texas Playboys music from the 40s. Tommy Duncan invented the sound that has made Merle what he is.

June 14: drove from Toronto to Buffalo for the second year to see Ray Benson and Asleep At The Wheel at the Art Park in Lewiston, NY. Three hours of rollin' Wheel faves - all for a $6.00 parking charge! Concert bargain of the year.

shgeo, I like your sig line. ;) (Just had to say that 'cause I just noticed it.)

Check out the song. He recorded it in the late '40s. It's what they used to call hokum blues.

Lightnin' Hopkins was one of the greatest acoustic blues guitarists. You can hear his influence in a wide variety of music even today.

I was getting tired of my old sig line and was listening to this song.

Okay, well, I googled it, but this is the closest thing I could find... and I kinda like the lyrics, although I haven't heard the music! I doubt this is the song you were referring to! Do you have the lyrics to that one?

LET ME PLAY WITH YOUR POODLE
(Tampa Red)

Look-a here baby, listen to my song,
don't get mad because it ain't no harm.
I want to play with your poodle, can I play with your poodle?
Let me play with your poodle, I mean your little poodle dog.

He's the best little poodle I ever seen,
and what I like about him you keeps him clean.
Let me play with your poodle...

Your little poodle got long black shaggy hair,
look like a face like a teddy bear.
But can I play with your poodle...

I like the way he twists his tail,
I would buy him but he ain't for sale.
But let me play with your poodle...

I play so soft so gentle and sweet,
I would like to play with him each one day a week.
Now can I play with your poodle...

(...recorded in 1942)

I like country music, especially some of the women performers. If you want to talk about music that sucks, there is nothing worse than rap.

Rap cannot be considered music, IMHO. :barf:

That is essentially the same song. I didn't realize Tampa Red (also famous for such hokum songs as "Tight Like That") wrote it. Lightnin's version has more verses and was recorded in 1947 by Alladin.

Bluegrass is great

and amongst the best would have to be Flatt and Scruggs

I was recently sent their Carnegie Hall liive concert cd from 1962 :D

Great cd

I like a lot of the old stuff, most of the alt country. What you hear on the radio is top 40 pop country. If thats what you base country on , well it would be like saying you don"t like rock by what you hear on some top 40 bubble gum station aimed at 13 y/o's.

BTW country is the number one radio format in the U.S.A . Now if only they played real country.........

There used to be a radio station around here that played American Oldies but Goodies. No British stuff at all. It was great.

Then they had one of those consulting companies come in, do a "survey" and tell them that the money was in country western.:thumbdn:

One day I turned that station on and heard twangy steel guitars, called to find out what happened, then thanked them for their past entertainment.

They went broke within months.

The only "country" music I could ever stand was old stuff that more accurately could be described as "Folk" music, maybe bluegrass and stuff like some Johnny Cash. All this So-called "Country" these days is just the bastard offspring of rock and roll, and poorly done at that. Just a bunch of crappy pop music to sell to the morons who cant tell the difference between music and fecal matter. If you cant sing, or write good songs, or play your instruments well- you can still have a future in country music- it is like welfare for all the crappy musicians or something. :thumbdn:
there are many country singers that sing FAR, FAR, better than in any other genre as far as range and ability go.....the aforermentioned faith hill, martina mcbride...lead singer from rascal flatts has a range that would make any singer jealous, vince gill, diamond rio.....hate the music is fine, but let's not denegrate the abilities of those who sing the music. Also, keith urban is quite a gifted vocalist...next time you think that, try and sing one of the songs from some of these artists and get back to me......I prefer old rock or old country, but i cannot say these performers are in country because they are not talented.....

I don't know what most people consider good country or bad country. All I know is what I personally like the best,:

Alan Jackson
George Strait
Toby Keith
Willie Nelson
Waylon Jennings
Brooks and Dunn

Oh by the way, talking music, I wish someone could explain to me "Crazy Frog" and also "Schnappi das kleine Krokodil".

Now that's some pretty freakin psychotic crap right there. WHat's the deal with that? :barf:
