What happened to knives coming sharp?

As far as I know, they should come with a convex edge. They are sharpened on a belt sander(grinder)
Added-They then polish on a hard felt wheel with aggressive compound-from faq's sticky

That's an interesting find, be interesting to see what CRK replies. These two knives clearly have very different types of edges on them. That said, from a speed/and durability standpoint I could see where a manufacturer would prefer sharpening on a belt and having a convex edge.

Is it possible that someone returned a different knife than received to the dealer and it was resold? Or that it was received, tampered with, returned as new and resold?

I'd want to hold the dealer's feet to the fire, but I'd want to get CRK's input on it first. If it was egregious enough they might reach out to the dealer and tell him to make it right, (financial compensation), or lose their status as an official CRK dealer. But that's a guess on my part.

Good luck.

I don't mean to minimize anyones perspective here, we are all entitled to feel how we feel based on our experiences , and personalities. This reminds me of guitar buyers, who like knife buyers a lot of times buy sight unseen.Internet ... Guitars need a set up depending on YOUR preferences. When you buy, you should expect that. Strings too high, too low etc, just as everyone does not feel the same about sharpness.. If it matters , learn to sharpen, find a guy (gal) you trust to do it, or send it back.I have never had a CRK I couldn't get sharp enough for ME.

I couldn't agree more.
It's wrong that the dealer can ship something that clearly is not as it left the factory, then ask for a frankly ridiculous re-stocking fee as a way of dissuading the customer from returning the item.

At the end of the day it is the dealers responsibility to make sure that the item shipped to the customer is factory new. That's what being a factory dealer is.........

It's completely possible these were returned, used (not to the point of being obvious) etc. and the dealer did not notice, nothing about them appears used to me.

I heard back from CRK, they basically said they have several people in their grind shop and it's possible one or both were sharpened incorrectly. They did not address my question about how they are sharpened or if they should have a single bevel or be convex, they just mentioned again they are sharpened 18-20deg. They also mentioned that some dealers sell on Ebay, and as a result they get a lot of returns (no idea if these dealers do).

They suggested I check inside the handles for date codes, as so far they've never seen fakes with date codes. Both handles have date codes, at first I thought I was a bit odd that the knife with a born date of July this year had 2023 date codes on the handles, but it sounds like this is not that uncommon from previous posts. Which would make sense they probably keep a pretty large stock of parts.

They did not seem interested in who the dealers were, didn't suggest sending it in for a spa service it etc. They did offer to try and authenticate it from pictures if I wanted, but based on date codes it would seem they are likely authentic. I got the impression they were not that interested/concerned about it.

I can't speak about Southern Edges but Recon 1 have been a CRK dealer for many years and are well respected in the knife community. I highly doubt that the provenance of anything from them will be dodgy.

Still it was a disappointing buying experience for you. Hopefully not to be repeated.

I've bought from Recon 1 with no complaints.

Southern Edges - 48 hours, 17% restocking, no refund for shipping costs, all sales over $750 final, period.
Recon 1 - 72 hours, 15% restocking, no refund for shipping costs

Both have 5% fees just for making and cancelling an order even before its even shipped.

I get that a retailer wouldn’t want to pay return shipping unless they were the ones that clearly made an error.

The rest is ludicrous. I won’t be using either of these dealers. Thanks for this post, and for the reminder to verify terms before purchase. (I’ve gotten lazy in that regard too.)

I can accept some sort of restocking fee when there's nothing wrong with an item and the buyer just decides it's not what they want (in my case slippery micarta scales). Even as disappointing as it is for a knife to come dull from CRK, I would not make a return for that, I'd just sharpen it.

I'm sure either dealer would not charge anything if there was something wrong with the knife. Obviously they incur cost in time to pull the order, pack it, ship it, then when returned, unpack, inspect, and issue refunds etc. Larger shops probably just eat this cost as the price of doing business, but it's probably not insignificant for a low volume small shop if returns are frequent. There's also a lot of buying unseen in the knife world because most have no way to look at or handle more expensive/rare knives prior to purchase, so returns with an "open" policy probably get heavily abused.

However I do think 15%+ is steep, that's $100 on a $650 purchase, but if the goal is to discourage customers returning non-defective items (and future purchases), it certainly works!

I'm sure it could be sent in for a spa treatment and sharpend, heck I have a wicked edge, it's not really that. A knife that expensive, much less two of them, should come sharper than a $70 Civivi. :)

Based on the one small sebenza that I sent in, I have little faith in their spa service returning a knife with a good edge. Mine came back with a huge wire edge.

I'd have to agree, I just got my 25 back from having it's blade updated to magnacut, and the edge is similarly disappointing even compared to typical spyderco/benchmade etc. factory edges I get.

I don't know who is doing the sharpening for CRK but they really need some lessons and some QC in that area. They should be embarrassed of the edges that came on these 3, and there's no hiding behind this last one, it came strait from CRK. That said edges are consumable and sharpening is easy, so it's really a nit pick, but one would think CRK would take more pride in delivering a sharp edge. It's not like they are Civivi or something.

That said to give some praise, I will say they clearly gave the knife the spa treatment, it was reblasted, washers were replaced and it was cleaned, none of which I asked for.
