What happened to Opinel's quality control?

Found an Opinel on sale and of course immediately got it shipped to me. What a bargain! So I get it out of the sealed package and first think that the blade is already rusted. I feel the edge and it's really jagged. I quickly go out into the sun to inspect it closer.

I'm used to dull knives from them, but so far they all had a plain edge :D I don't understand how models such as this leave the factory. The photo does not do it justice, I've never seen such deep cuts before, it's like someone worked that edge with a saw. I've seen edges that were knocked on coconuts and they don't look like this. At the end of the day, I love modifying Opinels. So this disaster gives me a job over the weekend.

Also. I removed the locking ring before sanding the handle. And Opinel seems to be making some changes to the design. I just checked my other models and they don't have that. It says "patented" next to the slit, this seems to be new.

Hey buddy! too bad about your knife being messed up . :( hope you get it fixed have you tried sharpening it? good luck with it.

Nothing a diamond stone won't fix, trust me. I just find it peculiar how lazy Opinel have recently gotten. Like I said, every knife I got from them was dull.

I recently bought a Carbone No 8 and noticed the same kind of edge damage in the same location and the same slot in the collar.

the Stainless came perfect though

That's rough, wow. And I thought it was only my bad luck. I do love Opinels, but there's been many models recently which should have not left the factory.

I've personally not noticed any bad ones recently, and I hand inspect every knife that goes through the shop. That being said, those could have all been from one bad batch that went into a major distribution channel.

Even if this has been one bad batch, why do multiple shops sell knives in such conditions? Either they put them away, folded, or they do check them and hope no one asks for a refund or an exchange.

It would be almost impossible for a knife shop to open every box to check every blade they sell.

Not impossible at all. It's just an inconvenience they're not willing to take.

I have to add, out of 2 Opinels I bought , a #12 and #9 DIY, both came with an edge rolled so badly it was visible to the eye. Easy as heck to sharped but I'd call them.... unfinished.

Most shops don't check their stock. It comes in, packaged, and that package is never opened except by the end purchaser. So most retailers have no clue, and only find stuff like this when they get returns.

Sorry to hear this but I was recently on a Opinel jag and my 3 are spot on!

Here's the thing. Every single Opinel I have bought over the years was sold to me "bare". They were on display or taken from the storage as they were, not sold in a package. This knife which I ordered online too was only put in a shipping envelope. They get a batch of knifes delivered, take them out of the box and put them away like that. That has been my experience. Taking the quickest glance at the blade would do the trick already, as the knife I got looked like a saw.

Like Yalius said, thankfully, very easy to fix. But by no means acceptable that a customer has to fix a brand new product!
