What happened to Santoku ?

I really like this kitchen knife but when I recently tried to get one as a gift for my friend I realized it has been discontinued and difficult to find. Does anyone know if Spyderco has any plans of making it again (another steel, design changed) or is it just over? BTW I still would like to get one or two of them. Maybe you know who still has it in stock?

I think they're switching over to a new maker. Have a look at the homemaker, it's IMO a nicer Santoku.

Homemaker looks good, but it also seems discontinued.. Nonexisiting on ebay, nonexisting on Spyderco webpage. Actually on spyderco.com there's only K05BK from Spyderco kitchen cutlery left.. Maybe I should post a "what happened to Spyderco kitchen cutlery?" thread ?

I bought one of the original Santoku. I used it half a dozen times or so but now it pretty much sits unused. I expected to use it like a chef's knife and it is just too light for that. An 8 or 10 inch Chef's knife with a full tang has some serious weight to it. That helps it to chop and slice through whatever. The Santoku just doesn't do that for me. I cook all the time and use lots of knives but that one is just taking up space!

All my carry folders are Spyderco, but when it comes to the kitchen I agree with tulsamal and prefer knives with some heft and full tang. I LOVE the Keshaw Shun Santuko:thumbup: I also like the Henckels (the German ones, not the chaper line) and Wustof knives.

There is a reputable vendor that have good variety of Kitchen Spydercos including Santuko.
I am not sure if I would be breaking Forum rules posting a link. Please PM me and I would provide you with info.
Good luck.

Sal recently responded to a question over on the Spyderco Factory Forum by saying that the Santuko and several other Kitchen Sharps, including the K05 PE, will be coming back into the lineup. No timeframe mentioned.

Thanks for the feedback ! The Deacon, it is good news !
WhyNot I can't send you an email through the bladeforums system - it responds that you configured your account not to receive any. If you could send me the link to toniktETinteria.pl please

I sent you a link. Please let me know if you get it. You can just reply to email.
Good luck!:)

I'm trying to get one (or 2) of these to Norway without paying more for shipping than the knife... So far not much luck..

If they do come back I can get them from Lighound who has great service for use on this side of the pond...

I think we still have some in stock at the factory outlet store.

We should have them back in production by '07. We're also planning a wood handle version like the Yin-Yang set.

Sal,
What is the advantage of using wood handle in kitchen knives? Are they as durable as plastic? Do you treat wood in a special way to withstand exposure to moisture and even hot water?
Thank you,
Mark.

Do you still ship to dealers then?
I'd love one or two, but John at Lighthound wasn't sure he could get them anymore. I will be buying some of the other kitchen spydies as well...

Correct, Lighthound is a great international shipping dealer. But I used to buy lights from them and did't know John is trading Spyderco, too. Good to know!

He just started dealing in knives this last year I think.

I've also mostly used him for lights, but it is so easy to just order a bit more after he started selling Spydies....

He is the best for us non-US people, cheap fast shipping and excellent service!

I don't think he normally sells the kitchen knives, but I've asked him to see if he could get some with his Spyderco order;)

John F. Jensen shows a bunch of them in stock also. He does not ship internationally, but since he is a Spyderco distributor, might still sell one or more to a dealer who does.

Thanks for the tip:thumbup:

I think I found a way to get some over to Norway from him:)
