What happened to the Kalinga 419s?

The two things I wish this folder (419) and the fixed (408) had was the cuts on the top of the blade to keep your thumb from sliding and a lanyard hole.

I agree Goose, on the thumb cross cuts. That 889 has us spoilt to those.

I wonder if Leroy.........?

ahhh,,,the elusive lanyard hole.... Be able to tie it down if it didn't like riding on the scoot.

Yeah John, those ridges are cool, especially when used in conjunction with the choil.

And the lanyard...ya ain't just whistlin' Dixie :)
I really want to carry it in the Alpha sheath, but I don't trust that snap.
Can see me doing 65mph on the freeway and that puppy falls out...bouncing down the road.
I just ordered a horizontal tactical sheath...hope that works out.
Stay tuned.

Hi All,

I just got back from the local strip mall. The knife shop had a 408 and 419 in stock  I just had to handle them. Fit and finish on booth was flawless. These will be on my must get list for 2008. The 408 fit my hand very well and I love all that S30V..."very cool". The 419 is a bit wide for my small hand size and not as comfortable as the 408. Maybe after I handle it a bit more I will become accustom the that fat grip???? The action of the blade opening is just as smooth as any of the Alpha folders I have....very nice. The retail price on these two knives in this store was 169.00 EA.:eek::eek: I'll find them for a better price next year ;)

Jimbo: can you check out the over all thickness of your camo 415 folder as compared to the 419? Thank you!!!!

jb4570 - They should be similar in size and feel - the 415 isa little more crowned on the grip which may make it feel a bit thinner.

As for getting one cheaper, check on eBay - I have seen the 419 going for $100 on eBay for some time now. I just looked and there were about ten of the 419's listed with Buy It Now prices of $98.99. There were a bunch of 408's for about the same price, and there was even one 408 with no bids and the opening bid was $89.

Here's a link to my search for "Buck Kalinga Pro" - http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=buck+kalinga+pro&category0=

eBay was my secret weapon for years before I discovered the online knife forums, and I still use it as a way to find rock bottom prices. Good luck - Jim

Mr JB...
That's what happens when you go shopping in your high falutin' Bev Hills hood ;)

That was cool you got to see one before you buy one...but, next time you take your poodle, Trixie, to get her nails done and a diamond collar at the strip mail, I hope you will be carrying one of your cool new Kalinga Pro's that you got from L.O. or while fishing off your yacht in the Bay.

Ya know I'm just messin' with ya and I bet dollars to doughnuts that you are just a regular Buck Brother like most of us here.

Hi Jim, Jim, Goose,

Yep I'm just one of the regular guys...not an EEE or SH....Man those guys got some very nice collections. I have to wait until next year because I'm tapped out on knife funds untill then. I've got to save some pennies from heaven for the new BCCI blades; and some custom shop goodies that are do in a few weeks.

Boy JB you had me until sentence 3 ;) (LOL) (I look forward to pics ;) )

Were all just regular Buck Brothers ;)

At least you can look forward to gettin' some Kalingas down the road!
(they are worth the wait BTW)

Oh Yeah Jb what Jim...mer said about the 415, the handle has a little more crown in the grip, but it feels almost the same.

Well when I do get them...If the folder still feels funny in my small hands....I'll just have to stretch them (my hands) to fit the knife;).

I'm so weak!!!! I found the set on line for 181.00 free shipping ;). The 408 was $93 and the 419 was $88....too sweet. Now I have to wait for them to arrive. I guess I'm just doing my part to keep our favorite company making knives here in the USA.

WOW jb, that didn't take long :D

You will like them!

I got a 419 and it is a nice knife, but I personally do not care for the open frame. I think it would have been a little nicer with the back of the frame filled in. They may have left the frame open to cut down on weight.

Well, mine is on the way. Almost $100 quickly departed.

This is not really my style of knife, but I'm intrigued by the craftsmanship that jumps out at me from the photographs.

Maybe I'm off in my intuition, but I'm thinking this is an American classic that may not be available forever......maybe not very long at all.

Time will tell.

Wait until you use it, that open frame is slick for cleaning once its packed full of "stuff" :D

It just washes clean through! I love it!

Why do you say that? (what gives you that impression?)

Its too popular? :D (J/K)

There were a few problems with production...If that comes up again Buck might have to choose between a price increace or droping it....

I've seen too many fine firearms and fine knives dropped by manufacturers for various reasons.....so when I see something like the 419.....I get a hunch.

I just have to think back on all the ivory-handled knives that I DIDN'T buy when there was a lot of ivory around.

Why didn't I lay in a better supply of Pre-64 Model 70 Winchesters???

And that Browning Challenger .22 pistol that I failed to buy in 1973?

Ouch.

This may not be the last 419 I buy.

Rocinante - I'm not quite sure I understand what you're saying here, but I don't see the 419 going away soon. The sintering tooling for the sides is very costly, and we try not to invest that kind of capital in tooling unless we see a product as having some longevity.

Personally, I am DYING to get an excuse to have a batch of nickel silver handles made up for the 419 and guards for the 408. I don't know when this will happen, but I'm patiently waiting. Unfortunately, this kind of decision genrally lies in the hands of the marketing group or the Limited Edition group!

We're waiting too, now that you mentioned this! Keep us posted O.K. ;)

I bet Leroy could do a lot with a 419.....I just wonder if it would be possible to silver - plate any part of it? Can you picture it in stag, red paper trim....
