Just as a by the by there is nothing wrong with a mono-hardness heat treatment if it is done properly. In fact for most makers of Japanese swords now they do the differential heat treat for aesthetic reasons rather then practical ones. I have no experience with the Cold Steel Katana so I could not say how good their heat treat is.
