What happens if you break the tip of sebenza?

To answer the question in the title.
You cry.
They do sell blades for $xxx. But I am sure that some dummy around here has broken the tip off. ;)

It becomes slightly shorter in blade length.

As stated by bellablades, crk will replace it for a fee. But it is not a quick turnaround or cheap.

Has anyone broken a tip off of their small sebenza? How did CRK handle the situation?

If you break the tip then that is on you and it has nothing to do with CRK, they are not going to give you a new blade. You can buy a new blade at any time for about $130, if the break is really so bad you can't sharpen it out.

Well it does have something to do with CRK because it is a sebenza... And obviosly they won't give out free blade I was just curious to see if maybe they will sharpen it out for you or charge you a smaller fee than a brand new blade or make sure the heat treat was fine to ensure it was a bad blade.

I guess it could happen like maybe a mm of the tip by accident. Then they could sharpen it out, I am sure. If you did something to break the tip like 1/2" off, I doubt they would check heat treat for cause. You would have clearly abused the knife. I have pushed knives for years and never broke a tip. I know what it takes and will not go there.
It is easy to use a grinder and regrind a new tip onto it yourself.
I am sure they will offer to replace it at your cost. If you were cutting and the edge was chipping like crazy then yeah, they will take care of you and test the blade for sure.
Get the Insignio if your worried. Or the Umnum or 25 have thicker blades/tips.
I carry a 21 because it excels at cutting and has a reliable and tough as nails lock.
So it would all depend on the magnitude of the situation and how much damage the owner has caused.

Thanks I appreciate the in depth response. Im mostly just a fan of the small sebenzas size over the large so I hope they make a small 25 or umnumzaan soon:)

I hear ya, I am happy that I am into the 21 design and need a larger knife to make short of cutting tasks.
But the small is so handy.
Why not just get an Insignio for the time being and see what you think? A bit tougher and it is much more handy than you may imagine.

You know what I mean, you broke it so it's your problem and not theirs.....

They will do a number of things to a knife as far as re-finishing and the like but I think you would be paying for that anyway no matter the reason for it. I personally see no point in bothering CRK about something that should be easily fixed on ones own or part of normal use and wear. If a blade breaks or is sharpened out of use and needs replaced or if there is a failure of some sort in any other part than I would be contacting CRK.
A lost tip is a totally normal thing to have happen to any user knife and you will get no speacial deals from CRK to sharpen it out for you. If you're talking about a half inch or something broken off then that is a different story. Depending on what you were doing to cause the break would be one factor on how CRK decide if there is probelm with the blade or the user and what should be done. :)

My older brother broke a small bit of his tip off of his large regular sebenza a few years ago..I fixed it by putting a swedge on it. Actually looked pretty good.
I guess all those years of hand grinding cutting tools for machining helped :)

Well at least it doesn't seem like it happens often because not many people said that they have broken a sebenza blade

I have only seen one blade in two parts and that was from a test although there are one or two that I have seen here that were cracked at the thumbstud, not sure if that really counts as broken though. You will find rather more blades that were simply sharpened to death over the years than blades that failed during use. :)

There are probably a ton of Seb's that don't actually see any use, just collection status but if it happened to me and it was fixable, I would look around the forums for a sharpening guru and pay some to have it resharpened. I would not try it myself as I am pretty new to sharpening so I would not try it! :)

Just my two cents.

If you break the tip you have two options.

- Sharpen it out yourself (this was standard practice with my grandfather when he broke the tip off his old traditionals)
- Send it to CRK.

How CRK deals with each individual warranty is their business IMO.

If I broke the tip through my negligence, I would expect to have to pay a fee. Unless there was a materials or workmanship problem. I know that is covered by their warranty.

+1 Very well said

a) you sharpen it and build a new tip
b) you send it to CRK, they sharpen it and build a new tip
c) you buy a new blade

I seem to remember Chris saying that "maybe" 100 broken blades have been sent back over the years
