what happens when you boil/steem kydex?

I recently reluctantly purchased a heat gun for a project. I'm surprised how often I use it now. One of those tools you don't think you need until you have it. Boiling Kydex is a messy operation. If I was to make a Kydex sheath or sheath liner, I'd opt for the oven or the heat gun.

Whenever I need a heat gun, I use my wife's craft gun. Super hot and an attractive pink.

one more question - what do you wrap the knife in before pressing it?

i tried to find dans tutorial but couldnt use the search engine :(

do you use just seran wrap, duct tape, masking tape?

I've dipped factory kydex in boiling water and softened it enough to tweek the fit with no problems. Just had to let it dry to prevent rust on the blade.

is there a possibility of the seran rap melting? my main fear would be onto the kydex more then the blade, cause i can douse the blade in alcohol and other things to desolve the seran, but im not sure about the kydex...

here's the process:

lightly oil the blade
wrap in 1-2 layers of either saran wrap or alum. foil. Wrap it tight.

Neither will melt....hopefully you won't have to leave it together too long...only takes a few minutes for it to set. Don't leave the knife in there - take it out, let it cool, put it back in to shape.
