I know, I know, another PSK thread, but I thought this was too good to not post about :D

As I’ve been working and reworking my PSK these past several months, I’ve also been trying to get my girlfriend to carry one as well. She finally surrendered, so of course I was stoked to set one up for her:). Although we’re usually never very far from each other when hiking, I wanted her to carry a basic kit in case we ever get separated. I was challenged by the fact that this was her kit, not mine; I had to REALLY keep it as light and unobtrusive as possible, or she simply wouldn’t wear it. So here are our current belt-pouch based PSKs (geared towards Northern California environment in a "dayhike gone wrong" situation).

Mine (slimmed down from my last thread):

The Contents:

-Guyot Designs, stainless steel, single wall, Nalgene bottle (holds all items in my PSK and can be used to provide safe drinking water indefinitely if I have an adequate source of fuel and am able to make a fire)

-AMK 1 person Heatsheet (Shelter, blanket, poncho, or even modified into an emergency bivy with a bit of duct-tape)

-1 liter Aqua pouch (back-up water container that can be cord carried, can be used primarily with purification tabs, can be used to get some water out of spots where a bottle won't fit)

-10 Micropur Tabs in a pill baggie (Should last 3 days at 3L per day, or 10 days at 1L per day. Allows me to purify water if I am unable to make a fire or provide enough fuel to boil water)

-6 x 600mg Ibuprofen and 6 Loperamide Tablets in a pill baggie (To treat inflammation/pain and diarrhea)

-At least 50ft of 80# Spiderwire fishing line wrapped around a nail, 4 heavy-duty safety pins, and 2 x 2016 spare batteries for Micro Photon in a baggie

-Small roll of duct tape

-Coghlan’s Glass Signal Mirror

-Bandana (Water pre-filter, signal, improvised dressing)

-$20 dollar bill in a pill baggie

-Fenix E01 with two spare batteries (battery left out of light until needed, thus the three batteries shown)

-Gossman Firesteel Striker (unsharpened), Going Gear Misch Metal Firesteel (with some PJCBs already in handle), Spy capsule with my own PJCBs (I might want to fill half with PJCBs and half with fatwood shavings, we'll see), and a mini-magbar. All on a County Comm Aircraft Mechanic Key Ring (easily unscrewable). The Striker is on one of those easily detachable ball chain things.

-Translucent cased lighter

-K&M Matchcase with REI Storm-Proof matches (basic compass built into cap), and match strikers in a pill baggie.

-Tea light candle (wrapped in saran wrap to prevent wax from getting everywhere should the PSK get exposed to high temperatures, tied with a small bit of Jute twine that can also be used for tinder)

-EZE Lap 600 grit Diamond Sharpener (Serrated model because it was cheap, but will be replaced with Model M later).

-Keyring with Fox 40 micro whistle, SAK classic, Photon Microlight, and Peanut Lighter (This keyring sits at the top of the guyot for quick access).

I also have a couple of 1-quart heavy duty Ziplocs that sit on the outside of the guyot in the mini-rollypoly. I replaced my shoe laces with Paracord so there's some extra cordage there as well. The second folded-up mini-rollypoly on the belt can be used to hold all items when I need to put water in the guyot. I could drop it and still use the mini-rollypoly that carries the guyot to hold all the items as well. The other items on the belt are a Bravo-1 w/ army size LMF firesteel and a Vic OHT.

Hers (This is what happens when you give my girl Maxpedition!:D):

She claimed the M2 as her own and put sparkles all over it to seal the deal. She said that way I’m not tempted to steal it back from her :D. Don't worry, the inside is all business:p. It’s basically a smaller version of my own kit, so I’ll just list the contents.

The Contents:

-1 person AMK heatsheet

-1 liter Aqua Pouch

-10 Micropur Tabs in a pill baggie

-6 Ibuprofen and 6 Loperamide Tablets in a pill baggie

-Vector 1 Signal Mirror

-Vic Farmer

-Scout LMF Firesteel and stock striker, XL Spy Capsule w/ PJCBs, and Mini-Magbar with hacksaw blade

-Translucent cased lighter

-Waterproof matchcase with REI stormproof matches and strikers

-Tea light in a pill baggie

-Keychain with Peanut Lighter, Fox 40 micro whistle, Keychain compass, Fenix E01 with battery left out, County Comm slide switch LED, SAK classic

The M2 can fit all this comfortably. I can squeeze a few bandaids and neosporin one use packets in as well, but they're more for comfort rather than any medicinal value. I want to try adding a little bit of SpiderWire, duct-tape wrapped around a card, and a bandana. Maybe I can get her to replace her shoelaces with paracord too. And I just realized I should add a $20 bill to hers too, don't know why I forgot that. Lastly, the only other thing on her belt is her Mora stainless Clipper.

Just a note: I have a full First Aid Kit in my daypack; I don't think you can carry anything that would make a difference in a serious injury in the guyot or the M2. So I don't have any dedicated FAK items in our PSKs. These kits are geared primarily towards shelter, signaling, water, and fire that will always be on our person. We have "better" gear (and the FAK) in our daypacks that will be used first or primarily in a emergency situation.

Just wanted to share the sparkles (and throw my new revised PSK up while I was at it), thanks for looking!

Those two kits look pretty good to me, but where is the first aid kit? if you want to keep it simple, a small camera bag (kind that holds the point and shoots) work well.

I have a full one in our pack, just edited the OP to replace the first "FAK" with "First Aid Kit."

They do work well  The M2 is about the same size (little more room) than a P&S camera bag, and I had an extra laying around so I figure I might as well use it for her kit :)

haha... that's great...:D nice looking kits Russell... make sure she knows what's in there, and she knows how to use it...:)

Thanks for the update, it makes more sense to me now. I like how you used what you had (the spare M2), I did the same thing with the Camera bag. I had a spare that was just sitting in a drawer so I figured I'd use it for a simple personal first aid kit.

It's not just bedazzling. It's functional too. She can use those for focusing light to start a fire... err... signalling ....err...

Nope, it's just bedazzled :)

My wife would dig it.

Haha, thanks guys :) It started out as a joke and she had fun messing with all that glue and rhinestones, but she's actually pretty stoked now about how it turned out.... I'm just happy I finally got her to carry one. Now, as Mike pointed out, I need to get out with her and make sure she knows what she has and how to use it all effectively.

And Wildmanh, those camera bags are indeed a great size for a simple personal first aid kit. I was thinking about getting one to use for a small first aid kit too, to attach to my maxped bottle holder for when I go out on short walks/hikes. That'll be my next thing to work on

any plans on letting her decorate your PSK ???

Weeeelll....I was thinking I could use some nice glittery stuff and sequins to make the belt and rollypoly more visible...maybe get her to rehandle my bravo-1 with some nice rainbow micarta so I never lose my knife on the forest floor....might as well ask her to put some nice pink stayglow scales on my OHT too while we're at it....:p:D

That's cool...I always encourage my girlfriend to pretty up her stuff. That way she likes it more and is more likely to have it and use it.

Thanks again guys :) Yeah, I didn't want to force her to carry stuff she didn't want to, so anything to make it more appealing and fun
