What has your pet taught you?

My three Weimaraners have taught me about unconditional love, and how to enjoy the simple things in life. They are also extremely good judges of character... if they like someone, you can bank on that person being ok... if they don't like someone, you just know something isn't ok with that person... sort of an early warning system regarding other humans.

Dogs rule! :D

Yogi is a gorgeous boy. How could anyone abuse such a special creature?  :(

I think people have expectations of behavior from their dogs without having a clue as to producing that expected behavior. Add to this the factor of a chaotic, or otherwise messed up personal life, maybe a drinking problem or worse. The mess of their personal lives and the dog that doesn't behave as expected makes for frustration and anger. The dog gets hit, kicked and yelled at. Eventually he gets kicked out or otherwise abandoned. This is just what I imagine in my head. The stories probably vary and are repeated by the thousands all over the country. The innocent always pay for our messes. Kids or dogs.

Thought I should add that I realise your question was rhetorical, but I felt compelled to respond with an opinion. :)

I have had so many pets: mice, hamsters, goats, cows, horses, dogs, cats, pigs, rabbits... I don't even remember them all.

Right now I have my standard poodle and two shelter cats. I have never had an animal hurt me on purpose. I think that's what I've learned: never hurt anyone on purpose. If they deserve it, heck yeah, but not unless they deserve it! ;)

BTW, I still think toads are the kindest creatures in the world. :D

A bullfrog bit me once, but I was feeding it worms in my mom's goldfish-turned-frog pond. It jumped up and bit my finger, missing the worm. It actually kinda hurt! I guess they have little razor-like thingies in their mouths that slash your skin (obviously to help devour their prey) and it hurts! At least, when you get bit by a bullfrog that is like two pounds (this thing was HUGE!) I had little slash marks on my finger for a week!

After following this thread thus far, one thing I've learned is how much another sentient being can teach us, even without the ability to speak.

My doogy has taught me that playing ball makes the worst day alright!! His smile and happy to see me when I come home, makes everything OK. I LOVE my doggy!!

my cats have taught me that no matter how bad a situation your in you can get out of it by being cute. (unfortunatly I am not cute)

My dog jumps on my bed and nudges me awake before the alarm clock goes off, and when he does that, I know that, not only is it time to get up, but if I don't, he might have an accident on my bed or my carpet.

I'm not sure if toads are the kindest creatures in the world, but they're cute little guys. We always have one living under our AC compressor right out the back door in the dog run. He hunts out there on balmy Summer evenings, looking for crickets and such. There's always a good supply of bugs out back. He ducks back under the compressor when I let the dogs out to pee, I guess he's afarid of getting run over. It's kind of like having another pet. :)

Java the Mutt, our Shepherd/Collie (Collerd or Sheplie???), has taught us to limit the size of "Fetch" toys to less than 8-foot 4 X 4s. She even retrieves cinder blocks and small children (if they try to run away :D )

My dogs and cat have confirmed my feelings that I'd rather hang around them than most human beings.

I've owned horses my whole life and they've never hurt me on purpose. You just have to remember that they think differently than us,see differently than us....And that they weigh 1000+lbs.When they play they play with you as they would play with other horses.I've found it has brought me closer to them to play on their terms.

Fantastic responses! Sounds like the pets have taught all us old people new tricks! Er... I don't know how to tell you this Cindy, but your dog must be a mix of several breeds. :)

A sign my grandad had in his shop, "The reason a dog has so many friends is he wags his tail instead of his tongue" People I know could learn from that :)

That's cute. :) But yeah, I will still maintain my original post that they are the kindest creatures in the world.

Have you ever heard of a toad hurting someone? :p They are also easily tamed. They like to be held once they realize you aren't going to hurt them. They will even snuggle up to you if you pet them. Takes only a few minutes to "tame" one. ;)
