just wanted to see what kinds of things people have used thier opinels for...been edc-ing mine using it in the kitchen and for a little carving project I'm working on... haven't used it n the woods yet but I'll be taking it rabbit hunting next week...also any mods are nice to see.

Mostly I just take 220 paper to remove the horrid orange finish, and shape it a bit more to my hand. Finish with 500 paper, polish with 0000 steel wool, and use Minwax stain and Helmsmen spar urathane. While sanding, I remove he locking ring, and sand inside the blade slot to widen it, and sand as much as i can around the blade pivot, moving the duct taped blade around so I can get around it. I use a pipe cleaner to get the urathane inside the blade slot and around the blade pivot.

I reshaped my #10 a little bit, to make the pommel a little more comfy in my hand (now it curves forward, reminiscent of a "clasp knife"). Soaked in in linseed oil for a day, used it for a couple days, then soaked it again. Now, it's just what I want in an Opie. :)
It sees mostly food prep duty, at home and out in the woods, although it's been known to perform camp chores quite proficiently. ;)

I find this mod makes them easier to open.

Circlip pliars, or a couple of levers, or a wide screwdriver twisted sideways in the opening to spring it open enough to remove.

Oh my goodness, I can't believe i didn't think of that. Quite simple.

Thanks!!!!

So this morning I had to give a presntation for my ems staff....I supplied bagels spreads and coffee....everyone came in groggy in the morning and started to tear in to the bagels and realized that we had no utensils ironically out of numerous emt's and paramedics noone had a knife of any kind except for my trusty opinel#7 which deftlly sliced up a dozen bagels spread over a pound of creamcheese and stirred mutiple cups of coffe it was wiped on a napkin and was good to go....it was amzing how many comments I got on the knife, everyone loved it....and one of the staff is from greece and claimed that almost everyone in the greek countryside carries a knife that is very similar... and it got me thinking that it seems alot of southern european countries seem to have idigenous knives that are widely used as part of the culture, which is strange because as is often mentioned here it seems much of modern american culture is antiknife...I for one theorize that it has to do with the fact that succes in the us is largely defined by monetary achievemen in a corporate world where people have little contact with manual labor or the earth, also american media often portrays knives as weapons instead of tools ( wonder if a pocket hammer would be looked at the same way)...but now I'm just rambling.....Well thanks for listening....I love reading everbody's posts here....Thanks for letting me feel like part of the community.

You don't have to soak it entirely- just the pivot is enough- but I had a container full from soaking a kitchen knife handle, and figured I'd use it.

A friend of mine took my Oak number 8 and filed diagonal groves around the handle. Makes it grip better when wet.

It also makes a great cardboard cutter!

I've used my #8 as a camp & trail knife, for food prep, and for whittling. That thin carbon steel blade is just the ticket for slicing!

Try these links, you will have some ideas, unfortunately you've got an English version but it looks like it doesn't work:

If you want to see more try this one, apologize it is only in Japanese or French, but sometimes viewing is better than speaking :D

Did some sawing with my Opinel saw yesterday, collecting yuletide fir branches for decoration around the door&as frost protection for some plants in the garden.

Waiting for the postman to bring me a No.8 in Bubinga wood I won on German e-bay.

Rescue Riley your remarks about knife owning are I think very accurate. There are some interesting Italian wooden handled knives, olive or juniper that are a workingman's carry.America & other places are becoming anti-knife because of the idiocy and crude sensationalism of the media with its obsession with crime&malcontents-fertile ground for ignorance and opportunistic politicians to take root.
