what have you done with your opinel

America & other places are becoming anti-knife because of the idiocy and crude sensationalism of the media with its obsession with crime&malcontents-fertile ground for ignorance and opportunistic politicians to take root.

America has NOTHING on the UK for anti-knife hysteria. Not even close.

Well yes you are right unfortunately. I can't even take a tiny Schrade lockback or Case Mini Copperlock there as locking knives are generally illegal, wait a minute then so is the Opinel!!Watch out French tourists who come over for a day trip picnic with their food prep knife!

Hey willgoy, how bad has it gotten where you are? Has there been much of the anti-weapon idiocy in the media like here?

Good evening to you jackknife:thumbup:

Tried to post a reply earlier but odd things are happening with the server it seems:eek:

During the summer a deranged man ran amok in a supermarket, grabbed a large kitchen knife & killed a 74yr old Dutch tourist, maimed his wife & other by-standers.All this with no warning or provocation. Now these things are deeply shocking but the reaction here was measured: there was no populist knee-jerk response along the lines of knives are bad ergo all knife owners must be maniacs they must all be stopped! Hunting knives are generally behind glass in shops but nearly all Finnish workmen carry a folder or puukko openly on their overalls so there has been no witch-hunt against knives.after all, ever seen a mechanic without a spanner?

In November, a young man shot himself in a secondary school after killing 7 other pupils. This too is very shocking and horrible, but again the response has been cautious:proposals that handguns not for under 18s and people with criminal records of violence or mis-use of firearms and severe psychiatric illness not allowed guns.A not unreasonable response frankly. We do not have the constitutional controversy over arms that you do in the US.Guns are for hunting or target practice not for defence. You can carry knives if you have valid reason and are not threatening people with them. That said, taking anything bigger than a SAK into a pub or club might be viewed oddly as alcohol and violence do sometimes go together. As I wrote earlier, I hold the media in many countries responsible for anti knife terror. If the media loves to dwell on violent crime&maniacs then opportunistic politicians do push forward with simplistic distortions.Everywhere, there are potential nutters who might attack you at any time with anything, fortunately it's none too common despite what the media would have you believe. Making up endless new laws and thus making us all potential criminals is no response in my view, and so far, it has not happened here overmuch.

Update on Opinel USING:

Got hold of a couple of Bubinga wood handled models recently. The No.6 a very nice small job and the standard No.8 workhorse.

Both came from an obviously moist environment in Germany...could not open them without using pliers! Couple of days in my dry centrally heated home and now they open with no problems. The wood is very nice, a dark colour and an African hardwood I believe.Worth getting some!

It sounds like they need a good sanding down inside the blade slot and around the blade pivot. Then a good soak in some linseed oil. I am totally unfamiliar with bubinga wood, I don't know if it is as libel to swelling as other hard woods. I just got a number 6 last summer, and its the smallest Opy I've ever had, but its a great size edc pocket knife. It's bumped my number 7 out of edc duty.

How wet a climate are you in Willgoy? I picture in my minds eye a dark snowy wet winter.

Should be a very dark and very snowy winter! Until 2005 it was usual to be from -5c to -30c at this time of year.Check the records, not just my memory...2006 was a 'green' Christmas, barely freezing no snow and green grass.2007 as I write is 5c PLUS raining like hell, windy and WET WET WET,green grass and mud everywhere.Never see anything like this, ever. But then, climate change is just a myth according to our pals in the political forum.... Normally, opinels work fine as a snowy cold winter has very dry air, just like the hot indoors. Thanks for the tip JK, I'll try oil, whatever, Opinel is a fab basic knife, and the saw.....

My #6 C/B is one of my mainstays. It has defeated every knife that could be put up against it, and I have really grown attached to it. I can let people use it knowing that if they do wreck it, I can fix it or replace it for very little (aside from the emotional pain).

I carved and sanded the handle, and actually didn't finish it with anything. I just soaked it in mineral oil for a while. Fits me like a well tailored glove. :D
