I've been looking at KMG grinders lately, and can't decide on what HP motor I should choose. The 1.5 HP motor will run on 110V, which is a plus. The 2 and 3 HP motors require 220V, but are more powerful. Is 1.5 HP adequate or is a higher HP rating preferred? Thanks!

Go bigger. I'd suggest 2HP min at 220V. You'll have to do it anyway if you stay with it. Just my .02.

I can bog down my 1.5hp KMG fairly easy when using the flat platen when flattening about anything.
Go 2hp.

I use a Grizzly and a Hardcore 2 X 72 grinders. Both have 1 hp motors. I can't imagine needing anything larger. I guess some people really bear down on their work to be able to bog one down. I let the belts do the cutting. I have found that forcing things just builds heat quicker.

I agree with Bill. i'm running a 1hp on my kmg. i've never been able to bog it down using contact wheels.i can on the platen rather easily, but i grind mainly titanium on the platen so i let the belts do the cutting!

min of 1.5hp for a KMG. if you can, get the 2hp. I pop my circuit breaker all the time flat grinding with my 1.5hp DC Baldor. If you are hollow grinding, you will need less.

I would put ten horses too work if I could. But for the time being I run a 3HP and can bog it with little effort.

There is no substitute for Horse Power.

I'm an old hot rodder though, Fred

It looks like I'll be getting a 3 HP then. I'll have to convert my building over to 220V though. I still need to save some cash, so it might be a while.

i have a 1 horse tefc farm duty motor on my kmg clone, and it is plenty powerful. it would be nice to have bigger, but not necessary..
