Just thought I'd share some of the things I've learned and some of the conclusions I've come to since joining.

1.) Spyderco makes the best folding knives. Period. When I joined SOG folders were my favorite but after grabbing a few spydies including an XHP manix 2 Ive come to realize that sypderco has by far the best ergos and choices of steel of any company. which leads me to my second conclusion.

2.) the spyder hole is the best deployment system. Sometimes I practice having to deploy my knives as if I was in an emergency situation and the only knives I can consistently deploy are spyderco knives. Thumb studs take more focus and you may not always get it on your first try. the spyder hole is the most consistent way to open a knives and it can be done with gloves on.

3.) Cold steel makes some decent knives for the price point but Lynn thompson has really turned me away from their products. Im going to use my money to support the good folks in Wauseon instead :)

4.) For the money, swamp rat, ESEE, and scrap yard make the best fixed blades. The competition Isnt even close. I love the ergonomics of sog fixed blades like my beloved tech bowie but SR 101 crushes AUS 8 in every department.

5.) s30v is this generation's 440C. It is a solid upper level super steel but not the absolute best that is offered. Its become the bench mark for this generation's knives, just like 440C had been for the last few decades.

Thanks for all the knowledge guys! I learn more and more every time I visit!

SOG to Spyderco is quite the improvement, but there's plenty of other fantastic brands out there. Check out Benchmade and Kershaw/Zero Tolerance for some other great knives in a similar price range to Spyderco, and in the higher price ranges, Chris Reeve Knives are incredible, and then there's customs.

Those things you have "learned" aren't written in stone, and many people would dispute those "conclusions". :D

So you liked SOG but have now tried Spyderco and Spyderco makes the best folders period?

Just wondering if that is exactly what you meant.

Yeah I didnt mean to knock any other companies! I don't own any benchmades but I have handled several and just don't feel like they have quite the value for their price point. AT most stores a grip is around 100 bucks and for me it is closer to a 70 dollar knife. Compare that to a manix 2 at a roughly 75 dollar price point and I think spyderco has overall better value for the price. But I am looking at getting a 710 at somepoint and am interested in the ZT line. they look solid!

OP,I'd like to suggest that you return to this thread after a few more months of accumulating experience and see if you still come to the same conclusions.

:thumbup: Yeah it's funny what a couple of month's of experimentation will bring.

Statmonster, I will def be returing to this thread in a few months. I'm still satisfied with sub 150 folders and fixed blades so I'm sure my tastes and opinions on quailty will change as my knife collection and user experience grows. It will be nice to look back and see how much more I have learned :)

While I love my 40-odd Spyderco knives, there are several other equally interesting designs as well. Same for your shortlist of decent fixed blades - do try a Fallkniven F1 for example.

Been around knives 40 years and I agree with alot(not all) he said... if talking factory knives only.
I much prefer customs though.

Another vote! :thumbup: Mr. Miyagi say "come back in morning." :D

And another +1, Fifteen years ago I thought 150.00 was an expensive knife...now it's super cheap, but I don't venture past (about) 500.00 yet.
And it's been that way for years.

Come back, I'm still learning after 25 years of buying knives, they always seem to come out with new ones for some reason;)

There are FOUR things that I have learned about knives:

1. The more I learn, the more I realize I don't know;

2. Get a Sebenza;

3. Don't share everything that you know;

4.

Knives are like women or music. Everyone has an opinion of what's "best". Spyderco's are my favorite also in a folder. And S30V is good stuff IMHO. Someday I may get a Serbenza but the thought of losing a $400 knife (I like using my knives) tempers that feeling.

I've got about a dozen Spydercos and I think they're pretty good, yet they don't offer anything like the Sog Spec-elite 2 or Pentagon -elite 2 folders with their 5" blades. Spyderco also has nothing like CS's 5.5 and 7.5"Espadas or the 6" Rajah or the 6" Ti-lites or the...I'll stop here.
My point is that it really comes down to what you want, when deciding who makes the best of anything.
I have heard that Spyderco is bringing out a wicked looking Szabo folder with a blade that is rumoured to be close to 5". I'm certainly looking forward to that.

I just looked at the picture of the Szabo and it's stolen from Charlie Mike! That's a waved Police 3 all the way. Maybe they added a 1/2 inch to it. But that a Charlie Mike job all day long! :D

I'm relatively new on BF's but notice everyone seems to buy, sell, and trade much of the same for more of the same (and don't get me wrong - Spyderco, BM's, CRK are great). But I challenge most of you to step out and try Cold Steel's Caledonian Edge...very sweet; same goes for a Al Mar SERE 2000 folder. And if you want to find one excellent "Gentleman's Folder" that has is loaded with quality, try a Fallkniven PXL (I like the maroon micarta). The Caledonian and the PXL each deploy smooth as silk and you can't find that much better of a blade ...you'd be hard pressed to trade off or sell any of these once you own them. You'd just keep expanding...
