What I learned about knives in 40+ years on the job as a mechanic.

great post, T.E., thanks! you've made my desire for one of bud nealy's knives even greater. what is the length of the aikuchi? 3 1/2" or so was my guess, but it'd be nice to know if you have time. thanks, Neal

Nice post! Makes me wish I had hung onto all those different knives I've carried and used through the years. I do have my first knife I bought when I was 12 in the early 1970's. I would like to tell its story someday. If the story turned out half as nice as yours, I'd be satisfied.

Great timeline story! Thank you for sharing your experiences throughout the years, viewed through the carry knives of choice...made for a fantastic read!

(Haven't heard anyone talk about using oakum in 40 years! :))

Thanks. :)

Now you know I learned plumbing back in the day when PVC was just becoming available commercially for use only as DWV pipe. ;)

I had to learn the basics to work the plumbing aisle in my dad's hardware store. I looked like an idiot the first time that an old-timer came in and asked me for a hickey!

I was sent into the truck the first day for a pipe stretcher. Was it a hydraulic hickey? ;) Learning to bend it was the hardest thing in the beginning. My first boss used to let us keep the scrap for beer money at the end of the week. Used to take 2 10' lengths of pipe, put 1 into each end of the elbow and cut to size, what was left was scrap. ;) He caught onto that after 2 weeks and put an end to the scrap for beer fund. :(

Great post! Did you have other knives along the way in between edcing those work knives.

LOL on the pipe stretcher! Always fun to be the new guy.

Nowadays that would be considered hazing or bullying and would probably get you in trouble with the front office.

Nice to see and hear what real work knives are used for.

In my work there have been many times when I wished I could take a knife, reach into the computer screen, and cut the Microsoft employee whose defect wrecked my work....... otherwise I just open envelopes.

OAKUM! You must be an old guy . I haven't seen any of that for 30 years. Looks like your selection was very similar to mine .
Always had a jacknife beater in the toolbox but for the last 10 years or so i was employed my Severtech was the go to item. Great post amigo.
