Relieved immediately - all of them (From Battalion Commander down - and laterally into the senior enlisted ranks too), and Special Courts Martial. I think the juniors did time in the Brig - all now have no careers.

This may be obvious, but I still can't guess how they first figured out he was missing. At the next accountability formation? Someone had to carry an extra ruck? They eventually ran out of road guards? I give up.

I remember this story from 60 Minutes. I think one of his relatives called the Marines to inquire about him. That was when he was noticed missing.
Survival situation
Mixed forest/swamp
No two legged danger would mean I would not be forced to move for the duruation of the week.
Rifle - .303 Jungle Carbine or .308 Scout type rifle with scope.
If I had to move about I would take a .22 Mag. Likely one of the Marlin semi auto's.
Knives: 17.5" H.I. WWII, D.H. Russel Survival knife, and a Spyderco Wayne Goddard Light Weight.
Sharpening system: Lansky

Eastern woodlands. Rem. nylon 77 .22 light weight, pretty dependable. My 17.5 sirupati, 4" swedish lamenated high carbon, case trapper mod. pocket knife. Personally I too would prefer the water filter and I would take a Gerber strike force fire starter. Even with only one fuel tablet I have started 10 or 12 fires under most all conditions. Even when the fuel tabs gone you can start fire, just not as quikly.
Northern Michigan swamp and woods. Colt Python 6" in .357. 10 rounds of 180 grainers from Cor-bon for the bears, cougars (though they aren't officially here)and big game. 40 rounds of 158 grain 38 special wad cutters for food. Knives my new WWIII of course, with a Polzien tanto in ATS34 with a blade rigger shoulder rig and a small sebenza. DMT diamond stick. By the way I figure that If I do have to move a hand gun is the way to go and they are what I use to hunt with anyway.
