What if: Custom Shop 300 series

Ok, we can still play for fun.....

Going bring this up for two reasons:
1) I missed it when it was new and didn't get to play.
2) And the real reason. There was a recent thread in Traditional, asking what we would ask of any production knife company if we could have them produce any knife at all. My answer, below:

A "301" from the Buck Custom shop, except with a pen blade instead of a spey, Buck's superlative S30V blade steel, and Micarta scales.

Custom Buck 303 by Leroy Remer with Sambar Stag, fat stag for such a compact folder. Acquired from Leroy at the 25th BCCI bash in Post Falls last month.

very nice knife.

Thank you both.

Leroy is a champion. I had promised him photos of a WWII Geo. Schrade large hawksbill-bladed Wire Jack at OKCA but never sent them to him. I gave him the actual knife as a Birthday present in Idaho (he wouldn't take it otherwise, luckily it was his B-day real soon). Later he surprised me with this knife and I said that I couldn't accept it so he offered a 303 with Armadillo hide scales which I told him I couldn't accept but he countered saying that it was a Birthday present so I couldn't refuse his offer.

All the gear I acquired from Idaho is still on the dining room table where it was placed when I returned home. I am in awe of it and figure that it will take me a full year just to get over the fact that it is here with me, find a display area/cabinet and give it all a more appropriate home. I usually only acquire one knife at a time and the haul from the 25th was like a tidal wave of cutlery washed over me and set my head reeling. No formal dining for a year is a small price for such cool cutlery in the house! :)

I'd go for one if they're offered. At the very least I think the 300 series deserves better steel, and flat ground blades. 13C26 Sandvik, would be a slight upgrade from 420HC, and not add too much to the cost of the knife. I like 154CM, as well especially when it bears the Paul Bos logo. It would make a good CS option. I hope they don't forget the 300 series in the midst of all of their, newer more contemporary/trendy knives. It's a classic lineup, but the market is changing, as is Buck's image.

Oregon, your custom Buck 303 is a perfect pocketknife - stunningly beautiful! OH

I'd love to see a pen blade as well, though I'd be just as happy with a spey if all the blades were flat ground again.

Whetrock I agree so much. I think the 300 series offered in flatground would be ideal. The 420 doesn't bother me but if they did add an upgraded steel and long pull I would do what ever it took to get a set plus a few for carry. I'd even sell a few of my Bark Rivers to fund such a knife set.

Buck's 420 is fine by all means, given the price. It's just that with the Vantage series, you had varying degrees of quality with the Select/Avid/Pro, I like that, and would love to see the 300's offered similarly. Still, they're great as is, and I own several new 300s. I'd just be happy to see them produced 10-15 years from now at the least.
