what, in your opinion, would be the classic all time traditional american pocket knife?
I think it would either be the stockman, or the barlow, what do you think?

I would have add trappers to the list.

I'd go Stockman, or Scout knife. If we're talking more recent times, well then I'd go with the Buck 110 design:).

I read a few years ago that the trapper was the most collected pattern in the US. I would have to bet that that is still true.

I prefer the stockman pattern, but the epitome of the traditional American pocket knife would have to be the trapper.

I would also say Stockman.

The Trapper is probably the most popular, but the Barlow is THE American pocket knife.

Camper/utility, AKA "Boy Scout" knife. We've ALL had one o' those, at some point in our lives!

Believe it or not, I've never had a Barlow! Guess I better call Smoky MTn, huh?

Since we are looking for a classic design I would have to say stockman, because it has been around for much longer than the trapper.

The stockman is linked in origin to the cowboys of the west, who are of course a huge part of the American mythology. Trappers, on the other hand, are linked to grubby dudes named Festus who spent their time skinning skunks and muskrats and arguing with their mules. (Just kidding, trapper lovers!)
