Hello Folks!

I am in the process of putting together my first website (freebie from homestead.com

) and I would appreciate any advice/suggestions on what you folks would like to see on a non-commercial website that is all about knives???

The only thing I am trying to steer clear of, is too many pictures..... They really drag the load time down on homestead sites (atleast they do for me). I can build seperate pages for various topics, so a few pics here and there are not out of the question....

This site is going to be totally dedicated to knives (perhaps one tiny little "humor" page

) so just let me know what you would find helpful/interesting!

Many thanks!

Gene

When I first started luking here I would have killed for basic info. Reading different descriptions of knives made me feel like there was a secret language that I was never going to understand. I ended up looking all over the place to find definitions of what the different blade styles where and what made one type of steel different from another. I think that kind of info could help alot of people.

Hello Brad!

Thanks for posting!

There is definitely going to be a "definitions" page! I, like yourself, had a lot of trouble figuring out a lot of the terms used by folks when I first started lurking around this place..... I still have trouble from time to time.... Especially with some of the acronyms!

I know exactly what you mean - It can be very confusing! As a matter of fact, I have done spoke with a friend of mine (knifemaker) and he has agreed to help me with some pictures of disassembled knives so that I can label the various parts.... Unfortunately, this is going to take a little time though!

Thanks Guys!!!

What i would like to see is a website with a review section like the format in consumerreview.com. Knives will be listed, and people will post their reviews and then rate the knife.

Gene this sounds to me like one Herculean project you've given yourself. Pictures to me are vital to any interesting website, but I understand the restrictions you'll have to work with. I hope you'll link to lots of pics.

The Topics that I would like to see would include;

Basic terms and descriptions of knives and their construction.
Collecting and collections, Les Robertson was talking about a book of do's and don'ts of knife collecting, a section with advice like that would be very interesting to me. As well as links to some of the better collections would be great.
Where and when to buy advice would be great. I toured the ECCKS last year with TomW, and the way he looks at knives was a real education, I'm sure a section on how to buy smart and where to look would be greatly appreciated.
Trading up on knives, would seem to be a logical next section since it seems to be a common practice for most collectors. How to do it without losing your shirt would be very helpful.
How to get started in knifemaking would be great, along with how some of the makers here got started, and what they would do if they were starting out today.
Darrel Ralph did an article "What to look for in a Custom Knife" that is a part of the FAQ section here is one of the best articles I've read on the subject. If you could find some way for makers and collectors to expand on that subject, you would have a section that would be a "Must Read" for every person that's serious about knives and collecting.
I learned in the Navy that you don't need to know it all if you know where to look. A comprehensive section that links you to other data bases would be great. Maybe you could call it "Where to find more Info".
We all have our Favorite Makers, if there could be a section on interviews and personal stories about these makers, for me that would add so much enjoyment of collecting their knives.

These are some of the Topics that would be most interesting to me. Just how to go about putting this all together is beyond me? I'll be looking forward to see what you come up with?

I agree that a page of terms and info like that would be useful. Also a comprehensive list of links to custom knife-makers websites, and/or contact info might be good. Good luck.

It's a web, so you don't have to do a site which covers it all; Do what you like to read about, as that's what you're likely to do best. Don't start with the subjects that are already well covered -- do some keyword searches on subjects you're interested in and start with whatever returns the fewest and/or lowest quality hits.

Good decision, for several reasons.
