My brother [I think] bought a 2010 paperstone 112 that was odd..The BOS designation on the back of the blade was 12C27M ..Hmmm...Listing described it as 154CM. Does Buck use this?? And maybe call it something else? He said he "might" give it to me for Christmas The BOS logo was on the back of a coated 450 blade Black handle with NO Buck logo......Sample steel maybe?? Thanks all!

Sitflyer,on a old thread you brought up a knife similar to what Dave has..This has a outline of a guy wearing a hat..

Yeah, Buck uses 12C27M on some knives in the catalog also. The knife you're asking about is below. The listing description must have been a misprint or a mistake.

bucksway, 12C27M is a pretty decent cutlery steel, I have a couple Opinels with this steel in my Kitchen knife drawer, and it takes a very good edge and holds it quite well...

Was there a Buck tang stamp ???

"Sandvik 12C27M
Datasheet updated 2012-05-14 09:01:43 (supersedes all previous editions)
Sandvik 12C27M is a martensitic stainless chromium steel developed for the manufacture of kitchen tools with high demands on wear- and corrosion resistance properties. After heat treatment the grade is characterized by:
• High hardness which gives good wear resistance.
• Good corrosion resistance
Typical applications for Sandvik 12C27M are kitchen tools, such as different types of knives and scissors, that need to tolerate dish-washing.
Sandvik 12C27M knife steel was developed for highest possible edge performance while still having good enough corrosion resistance for daily use in a dishwasher.

Sandvik 12C27M knife steel is a step up in corrosion resistance from Sandvik 12C27 and the number one choice for edge applications where increased corrosion resistance is important together with high demands on edge performance and toughness.
With a hardness range of 53-59 HRC, excellent toughness and great corrosion resistance this knife steel grade is the recommended choice for kitchen knives, high-end scissors, gardening tools, professional butcher knives and fishing knives for fresh water environments.
Like most of Sandvik's knife steels this grade is fineblankable enabling efficient production."

Thanks! I wonder if it was a large run?? I confess in all the Bucks I have used and sharpened only a D2 118 could I tell any difference...[harder to sharpen] All the others seemed the same..

12C27M AKA 12C12MOD
_C_____Cr___Si___Mn
0.52___14.5__0.4__0.6

For comparison purposes, 420HC (Latrobe version)
_C_____Cr___Si___Mn___V
0.46___13___0.4__0.4__0.3

The 12C27M should be more rust resistant because of the higher chromium content. Based on the quote from the Buck website, sounds like they are hardened to about the same hardness. I would not expect the 12C27M to have noticeably better edge retention than the standard 420HC.

I have never owned a 124 which is kind of strange since I like big Bucks...My brother has a white handled micarta with a mirror polished blade that is really dramatic..Can you mirror polish 12C27M ??
